Ancient forests

Most of Europe was covered in forest in the Middle Ages. These forests of medieval Europe still contained all the mammals that had been there since Roman times, such as wild boar, deer and the European beaver. Today beavers are found mostly in northern and eastern Europe, but they once ranged as far south as the Mediterranean coast.
