Mona guenons have learned that mingling with their human neighbours can be to their advantage and regularly come into West African villages to steal food. The locals do not mind as it is taboo to disturb them. They believe the monkeys are the spirits of human ancestors. So monkeys can overcome their shyness and adapt, even if it means leaving the safety of the treetops.
