Producing solid polythene plastic from ethene gas
The cracking process breaks down single-bonded alkanes to form smaller double-bonded molecules called alkenes. One alkene produced by cracking is ethane. This can be polymerised to form polythene. The mechanism of polymerisation is shown using structural formulae, and a string of beads is used to illustrate some aspects of polymer behaviour.
