Why rich countries give aid to Africa
Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world. Although the country benefits from some debt relief, interest payments consume two-thirds of Tanzania's export earnings. Although the country previously had good health and education systems, over-borrowing and economic mismanagement have led the country to fall into serious debt. The 1998-2000 war between Ethiopia and Eritrea led to the loss of thousands of lives, destruction of infrastructure and the threat to life from land mines. Famine is a constant threat in the Horn of Africa leading to developed countries providing food aid in times of crisis.
