Pollution, acid rain and the environment
The burning of coal releases poisonous sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere. The resulting acid rain corrodes rocks and vegetation. The survival of plants, animals and fish is threatened. In response, the European Community put in place measures to curb sulphur emissions from power stations by half.
