'Strange' mushroom creature may be new form of life
Have a look at the creature in this picture. Is it an animal? Vegetable? Mushroom? Alien?
The answer, put simply, is that scientists do not know.
The deep sea creatures, discovered off the Australian coast in 1986, are known as Dendrogramma and cannot be placed in any known subdivisions of the animal kingdom.
Professor Jorgen Oleson, one of the researchers working on identifying which branch of life the "unusual" creatures are part of, said the task was "exciting but also a challenge".
