
North Korea "Executes" Defence Minister
N Korean defence chief "executed"; Quake rescue; Migrant quotas
South Korea's intelligence agency says the defence minister of North Korea has been executed for disloyalty and lack of respect for the country's leader, Kim Jong-un. The agency told parliamentarians in the South that the minister, Hyon Yong-Chol, was shot by anti-aircraft guns in front of hundreds of officials at the end of April.
EU leaders are meeting today to discuss the controversial plans for European countries to adopt a quota system for migrants. The plan has the backing of France, Italy, and Germany. The number of people who have tried to cross the Mediterranean so far this year is estimated to be nearly 63,500. More than 1,800 are thought to have died.
Rescue operations are resuming in Nepal, which has been hit by a second major earthquake in less than three weeks. About fifty people are known to have died but the authorities expect that total to rise. Aid agencies say Tuesday's quake has set back the relief effort from the first earthquake.
