The World's Best Schools
Best and worst schools in new league tables; Bus attack kills many in Pakistan; Quake rescue in Nepal
An international study of how schools perform has put Asian countries in the top five places and African nations in the bottom five. The study -- published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development -- used data gathered from tests taken by fifteen-year-old students in more than seventy countries. Singapore came top while last spot went to Ghana. The United States was in twenty-eighth (28th) place. The OECD says the aim of the research was to show the link between education and economic growth.
Officials in Pakistan say forty-three people have been killed in an attack on a bus carrying Ismaili Shia Muslims in the largest city, Karachi. The officials said another thirteen people were wounded. Armed men on motorcycles are reported to have surrounded the vehicle, which they then boarded, before opening fire indiscriminately. The provincial police chief said the attack appeared to be the work of Sunni extremists.
Rescue workers in Nepal are searching for survivors of Tuesday's powerful earthquake, the second in the country in less than three weeks. In one of the towns close to the epicentre of the quake, Chautara, teams were scouring the rubble of collapsed buildings. More than sixty people are known to have died in Nepal in the latest quake, but that figure is expected to rise.
