Stalin's Gulag
The notorious Gulag system in Russia was a network of forced labour camps set up to imprison millions of criminals and those who had angered the Soviet state. Conditions within the camps were brutal. Food was scarce and prisoners were forced to undertake hours of gruelling physical work daily. Leonid Finkelstein was sentenced to seven years in the Gulag.
