Gargoyles
Many of the churches of Leicestershire and Rutland have little stone creatures and gurning faces staring down on anybody who cares to look. Some of them are frankly rude, many of them are hundreds and hundreds of years old and tell us something of what went on in the mediaeval mind.
It just so happens that we're really well off for these kind of carvings and there's a project going on to record them all.
