Germany did not have a "de facto veto" over David Cameron's EU renegotiations, a senior member of Angela Merkel's party has said.

Iain Duncan Smith had claimed Germany forced David Cameron to drop a demand for a brake on EU migration to the UK - less than 24 hours before he was due to unveil the idea in a speech.

Elmar Brok, a member of the CDU party in Germany, was involved in the renegotiations between the European Parliament and David Cameron.

He told the World at One's Martha Kearney said Mr Duncan Smith was 'lying to his people'.

Alex Barker, Brussels editor of the Financial Times, also told the programme that an emergency brake on migration was "certainly still up in the air" in the last few days before Cameron's key speech in November.
