‘We assumed it was a bomb’: England fans caught in Euro trouble in Marseille
England fans Phil Appleton and Andy McLaren were in the middle of violence which broke out last night in Marseille, on the eve of Euro 2016.
The pair, from Teesside, told 5 live Breakfast that a flare was thrown into the crowd which they ‘assumed was a bomb.’
Tear gas was then also thrown.
“I couldn’t see. My eyes were watering, they were stinging. It’s ridiculous.”
Euro 2016 kicks off today when France host Romania. England and Wales then play on Saturday against Russia and Slovakia respectively, before Northern Ireland face Poland on Sunday.
