I welcome three-person babies announcement

The United Kingdom is to become the first country in the world to legally offer IVF using DNA from two women and one man.

The fertility regulator, Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, has said it made the decision to prevent children being born with deadly genetic diseases.

One person who has welcomed the announcement is 29 year-old Hannah Smith. She is a carrier of the incurable mitochondrial disease, which can leave people with insufficient energy to keep their heart beating.

Hannah tells the World at One that people should not be put off by the concept because "it is a tiny amount of the third person's DNA" that is used, describing the treatment as being "like any other donation transplant".
