Rabbi Blue: 'He threw out the rule book'

Rabbi Lionel Blue, one of the most well known voices on Radio 4's Thought For The Day, has died aged 86.

Lionel was born in the East End of London in 1930, the only son of semi-orthodox parents. He became a rabbi in 1960 and revealed his homosexuality relatively late in life - the first British rabbi to come out.

Someone who knew Lionel Blue well is Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, the Senior Rabbi to Reform Judaism. She told The World at One, that her friend "threw out the rule book" when teaching. She also added that by being a national broadcaster who openly supported gay people he "saved lives".
