In June 1948 the Western Allies launched the Berlin Airlift, a daring mission to supply food and other essentials to West Berlin by air. It was in response to the Soviet decision to blockade all routes on the ground into the western section of the city. The blockade meant that supplies could not get through to Berliners, who were already living in a city devastated by years of war.
Ulrich Kirschbaum spoke to Witness about living in Berlin at the time and how the airlift changed Berliners’ opinion of the Allied forces.
