'UK must remain open to collaboration'

Jo Johnson says post-Brexit UK must remain "the go-to place" for scientists and innovators.

Speaking to the Westminster Hour's Carolyn Quinn, the Universities and Science minister confirmed the government would not be capping the number of international students.

"It’s really important that we remain open to collaboration. We want to remain the go-to place for scientists and innovators from around the world and that’s not going to change, in fact it’s going to become an even more important feature of how we do science and research in this country."

With the Higher Education and Research Bill currently at Report Stage in the Lords, Mr Johnson also said the government's reforms in England would ensure that the "student interest is paramount".

"Universities do need to focus as much on teaching as many of them have been focusing on research and they need to make it more of a priority," Mr Johnson added.
