When should we hold the next election?

The question of a snap general election was put to Conservative MP Claire Perry and Labour's Frank Field on the Westminster Hour.

Claire Perry dismissed the speculation, but said that “my sense is we’ll go earlier [than 2020]… to me it’s absolutely right to get through the [Brexit] process and then go to the country”.

Labour MP Frank Field, on the other hand, urged the PM to call an early election, suggesting the possible consequences of the investigation into Conservative campaign spending in the 2015 election could make it difficult for her to govern.

However, he conceded that Labour were “clearly...not going to be ready for a very long time, to put it mildly. We’re not in any state are we? That is the truth about this coming election. That is the sadness of it.”
