'Brexit causes real consternation in NI'

SDLP MP accuses the UK government of ignoring the wishes of people in Northern Ireland.

Mark Durkan has said that Northern Ireland is “different from anywhere else in the UK” post-Brexit and that what he called the “hard Brexit mentality” is making its people look at alternatives to the union. Northern Ireland voted remain in the EU referendum by a majority of 56%.

Asked by the Westminster Hour’s Sam Macrory whether the question of Northern Ireland joining the Republic of Ireland is closer than ever, Mr Durkan said that “the whole issue is not just surfacing in a new and welcome way, it’s also pulsating in many quarters”.

Mr Durkan claimed that the UK government’s attitude following the EU referendum was “just suck it up, this is a UK wide vote – tough”. But he went on to emphasise his faith in the Good Friday Agreement as the “answer to all of the problems of relationships and difficulties between us within these islands”.
