Fighting cancer as a gymnast
Evan Van Aacken is an American junior gymnast competing at the highest level he can for his age of 16. The teenager faces a gruelling 86 mile round trip commute a few days a week to one of the clubs he trains at whilst still attending school every day.
But what makes Evan even more remarkable is he is doing all this still whilst battling with cancer.
Speaking to Sporthours Evan, his mum Teresa and his father William explain why Evan refuses to give up the sport even whilst going through chemotherapy treament.
His parents explain that “gymnastics is a much bigger part of Evan’s life than just a seasonal sport” and that the coaches and other gymnasts are more like a second family, and a key part of support system.
