A new road pricing scheme to replace road tax has been suggested by London Mayor Sadiq Khan. 5 percent of all government income comes from motorists. But that source of revenue is under threat from more efficient engines, and the rapid adoption of electric vehicles. The Office for Budget Responsibility forecasts it will drop to just 1 percent of the governments revenue leaving a massive hole in the public finances, so the mayor and others have proposed charging motorists based on how much and what time they drive.
