A Miraculous journey to the US Open
It was no real surprise that South Africa's Kevin Anderson, the 28th seed at this years US Open swept past his first round opponent on Monday... What was more surprising was that his opponent was there at all...
JC Aragone is currently ranked 536th in the world. He not even the best tennis player at his university... For the record he's the 5th ranked player at The University of Virginia... So it's pretty remarkable that he fought his way through to qualify for the grand slam tournament...
But that's not even half the story... In 2012 he slipped into a coma as his liver and kidneys failed, caused by a bad reaction to medication... He eventually recovered, but it left him as a Type 1 diabetic and in constant need of monitoring his condition even when on court.
He has been to the US Open before, but only as a fan, so this years success has been somewhat unexpected.
