Yvette Cooper: Fine social media over abusive content

The Chair of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Affairs Select Committee Yvette Cooper has accused Facebook, Twitter and Google of failing to remove hateful and abusive material "quickly enough" from their platforms.

Senior executives from the companies were cross-examined by the Select Committee about extremist content on their platforms. The hearing followed Twitter banning some white extremists from their site.

Ms Cooper told Radio 4's World at One that although some progress had been made, tougher action was needed. "If you're talking about illegal, banned or extremist content...the kind of thing that might be linked to terrorism, for example, and they're not removing it swiftly enough, there should be a system of fines in place".
