Why was Washington’s NFL team name so offensive?

Mark Trahant, editor of Indian Country Today, explains why Washington’s NFL team name was offensive.

Speaking on Sportshour, the member of Idaho’s Shoshone-Bannock Tribe explained that the team’s nickname and mascot “came from an era when natives were sold by body parts.â€

He also recalled being told by his father as a six-year-old boy not to use the ‘R word,’ and believes all US sports franchises that use Native American words will eventually have to make changes to their names.
