Does Facebook steer sceptics towards climate denial?
Climate disinformation has become more prominent on Facebook and users who show even a little bit of climate scepticism are more likely to be pushed to extreme climate denial than reliable information, a new report says.
Ava Lee, from Global Witness Advocacy Group, conducted an investigation into the spread of climate disinformation of Facebook and highlighted that even if a user has minimal interaction with climate disinformation, they will still be presented with more extreme content. Facebook have commented that a combination of AI and human intervention are being used to try and limit the spread of disinformation.
"We saw some really quite extreme content so some of which had outright conspiracy theories. We saw other things describing climate activists as being completely crazy."
"We've now given these platforms, including Facebook, enough time to regulate themselves."
