From Afghanistan to America via Albania: Refugee basketballers given new home

After fleeing their homes and leaving behind their families, friends and belongings following the takeover of the Taliban in 2021, Afghanistan’s female basketballers were expecting to be accepted into Canada to start a new life.

Their resettlement fell through at the last minute, however, and so Mara Gubuan, the founder of Equity League, scrambled to find a new home for the young women.

Now, after nine tough months living in Eastern Europe, 19 female basketballers have been accepted into the United States of America, where they will be able to continue their education and their love of sports will be allowed to flourish.

We speak to one of the basketballers, who wishes to remain anonymous in order to protect her family still in Afghanistan.
