Ruth
played by Michelle Dockery
Ruth is a Cambridge PhD student with a young son from a relationship with a German professor.
Liberal and laid back, when she discovers her mother’s real identity, and the lie that has existed between them for years, she is forced to reevaluate everything she thought was certain.
Michelle Dockery, who plays Ruth, says of the character “I tried to imagine what it would be like if my own mother turned around and said that and it would be a huge shock. When Sally first hands Ruth her memoir to read, Ruth is not convinced and believes these to be the ramblings of a woman showing signs of losing her mind. The moment Ruth realises that this is real is when she follows Sally to a gun shop and discovers her buying a huge shotgun. That’s when it really starts to sink in that this could all be true - then her barriers break down and she decides to help her mum.”
