Widowed Gladys lives with her younger brother, , whom she cares for with motherly concern. She comforts him when his work at Marshalls gets too much and fusses over his health. Her warm-heartedness extends beyond her home and she has supported many in her local community through difficult times.
Gladys is an alcoholic who have travelled a long road to reach sobriety. Alan keeps a close eye on her and is keen she attends Temperance Hotel meetings which promote abstinence. But despite her brother's best efforts, Gladys cannot always be kept safe from temptation.
