Mamdani wins in New York

The young Democrat Zohran Mamdani wins New York mayoral race.

Zohran Mamdani has won the New York City mayoral contest making him the first Muslim mayor of the biggest city in the US. Its a big political upset which makes him the youngest mayor there in over a century and marks a meteoric rise from the political novice as he was largely unknown until a few months ago. We take at a look at the challenges ahead for him.

In Sudan, the defence minister has pledged to continue the fight against the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group despite suffering the loss of the key city of El-Fasher in North Darfur. The army has been fighting against the RSF since April 2023, in a conflict that has totally devastated the country. We speak to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, who tells Newsday the situation of mass killings, starvation, famine and gang rapes are serious crimes and that the international community should take note of and hold the perpetrators to account.

And we report from Tanzania where life is slowly returning to normal following deadly elections protests.
