The Glyndebourne Festival鈥檚 annual visit to the Proms continues our Strauss 150th-anniversary celebrations with a semi-staging of his sparkling comic opera Der Rosenkavalier. Conductor Robin Ticciati conjures this gilded fantasy of fin-de-si猫cle Vienna with the help of an international cast, led by British soprano Kate Royal in her role debut as the Marschallin.

The award-winning poet and librettist Michael Symmons Roberts and musician, priest and broadcaster Richard Coles 聽discuss the literary works which inspired the composer John Tavener from George Herbert and John Donne to William Blake.

Shostakovich鈥檚 Tenth Symphony 鈥� a violent portrait of the horrors of Stalin鈥檚 Russia 鈥� is the centrepiece of this concert from Ji艡铆 B臎lohl谩vek and the 蜜芽传媒 Symphony Orchestra. They are joined by German violinist Isabelle Faust for the passionate nationalism of Bart贸k鈥檚 Second Violin Concerto, and the concert opens with the first of two posthumous premieres this season by John Tavener.

Better known as the electro-pop duo the Pet Shop Boys, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe make their Proms debut here as composers. The world premiere of their large-scale work A Man from the Future, inspired by code-breaker Alan Turing, sits alongside new orchestral arrangements of favourite Pet Shop Boys songs.

One of choral music鈥檚 greatest works, Jan谩膷ek鈥檚 Glagolitic Mass is a passionate, secular oratorio celebrating nationhood and peace. By contrast, conflict is to the fore in Brahms鈥檚 Piano Concerto No. 1, a work that distils the drama of the composer鈥檚 relationship with Schumann and his wife Clara. Valery Gergiev conducts the London Symphony Orchestra, with soloist Barry Douglas.

A concert of 20th-century English music explores musical friendships. Walton鈥檚 Hindemith Variations pay homage to a beloved colleague; Elgar鈥檚 'Enigma' Variations paint evocative portraits of family and friends. The finest Evangelist of his generation, Gilchrist sings the role at the Proms for the first time, under conductor Sir Roger Norrington, 80 this year.

The composer鈥檚 Sonata in C minor in particular offers an extraordinary musical portrait of the most musically rebellious of the younger Bachs.

Turbulent mythical love meets poised Classical elegance in a concert from the 蜜芽传媒 Symphony Orchestra that sets Mozart鈥檚 Piano Concerto No. 23 alongside Ravel鈥檚 sensuous ballet score Daphnis and Chloe. Launching us far beyond either Mozart鈥檚 Vienna or Ravel鈥檚 Paris, Jonathan Dove鈥檚 new orchestral work Gaia Theory explores the idea of life on our planet evolving alongside the environment.

Tonight鈥檚 visitors from Istanbul make their Proms debut, bringing the intoxicating East as filtered through Western ears. Sneak into Mozart鈥檚 harem and witness the magnificent Queen of Sheba (in views by Handel and Respighi). Balakirev and Holst offer folk colourings from further afield.

Returning for its second concert this season, Les Arts Florissants is joined by founder-conductor William Christie for a Late Night Prom that transforms the Royal Albert Hall into the gilded splendour of the Chapel Royal at Versailles, combining choir, orchestra and soloists for Rameau鈥檚 Grands Motets.

Mahler鈥檚 Symphony No. 5 鈥� an orchestral showpiece of shifting moods and intense emotions 鈥� is the culmination to this concert by the 蜜芽传媒 Philharmonic. The orchestra is joined by Pianist Alexandre Tharaud for Ravel鈥檚 virtuosic Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, and the programme opens with Sir Harrison Birtwistle鈥檚 atmospheric Night鈥檚 Black Bird.

Two rarely heard masterpieces continue our 150th-anniversary celebrations of Richard Strauss: the mighty Festival Prelude and the Deutsche Motette (practically a concerto for choir). We move to more familiar musical territory with Strauss鈥檚 Four Last Songs, whose late-Romantic nostalgia is shared by Elgar鈥檚 Second Symphony.

Continuing our commemoration of the centenary since the outbreak of the First World War, the 蜜芽传媒 Symphony Orchestra and Martyn Brabbins explore English responses to conflict in Ivor Gurney鈥檚 War Requiem and Walton鈥檚 poignant First Symphony. Plus Sally Beamish鈥檚 accordion concerto.

The first Greek orchestra ever to appear at the Proms, Armonia Atenea, and Artistic Director George Petrou, presents a programme with an appropriately classical flavour. Greek myths form the thread through a Baroque labyrinth of arias and overtures from French, German and Italian operas, including Gluck鈥檚 Orph茅e, Handel鈥檚 Arianna in Creta and Lully鈥檚 Phaeton.

The Proms continues to commemorate the anniversary of the outbreak of First World War, collaborating for the first time with the National Theatre for a concert inspired by Michael Morpurgo鈥檚 award-winning play War Horse. Lifesize War Horse puppets join the 蜜芽传媒 Concert Orchestra, Gareth Malone and the Military Wives on stage for a performance that explores the music and stories of the Great War.

Donald Runnicles and the 蜜芽传媒 Scottish Symphony Orchestra are joined by the National Youth Choir of Scotland for a performance of Mozart鈥檚 ever-popular Requiem 鈥� the composer鈥檚 powerful and prescient anticipation of his own death. The concert also features Beethoven鈥檚 elegant Fourth Symphony and the London premiere of John McLeod鈥檚 The Sun Dances, inspired by a Scottish folk legend.

Richard Strauss was just 20 when he composed his Suite for 13 wind instruments 鈥� and steeped in the musical tastes of his horn-player father, who revered Haydn, Beethoven and Mozart above all. Clarinettist Michael Collins and his ensemble London Winds pair Strauss鈥檚 youthful work with Mozart鈥檚 Serenade in C minor.

On the centenary of Britain's entry into the First World War,聽Baroness Shirley Williams and Colonel Tim Collins introduce an anthology of poetry and prose from 1914.

Donald Runnicles conducts a programme that looks to the past 鈥� a musical meditation on history, death and loss that still speaks powerfully today, 100 years after the start of the First World War. The concert sets Mahler鈥檚 bitterly elegiac Ninth Symphony against the ecstatic string writing of Vaughan Williams鈥檚 Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis, a work reimagining an English identity that would so soon find itself under threat.

Spiritual in a secular age, combining musical simplicity and generous radiance, John Tavener captured the public imagination like few others. The other-worldly atmosphere of a Late Night Prom frames a musical tribute to the English composer by the Tallis Scholars, leading the audience into the exact anniversary of Britain鈥檚 declaration of entering the First World War, at 11.00pm, in contemplative calm.

This concert from the European Union Youth Orchestra opens with Berio鈥檚 20th-century classic, Sinfonia 鈥� a witty, whistle-stop tour through centuries of Western culture, from Bach to The Beatles. Shostakovich鈥檚 embattled Fourth Symphony attempts to reconcile the same conflicts and contradictions as Berio, but finds only Babel and madness, in one of the composer鈥檚 most confrontational works.

The 蜜芽传媒 National Orchestra of Wales and Mark Wigglesworth perform the exuberantly rhythmic overture to Wagner鈥檚 early comedy Das Liebesverbot and Elgar鈥檚 richly orchestrated First Symphony 鈥� a work itself steeped in the Germanic tradition. Exciting young British violinist Matthew Trusler joins the orchestra as soloist for Mathias鈥檚 neglected Violin Concerto 鈥� a virtuosic celebration of song and dance.

Sakari Oramo conducts the 蜜芽传媒 Symphony Chorus and 蜜芽传媒 Singers in one of the great 20th-century dramatic showpieces 鈥� Stravinsky鈥檚 vivid and visceral 鈥榦pera-oratorio鈥� Oedipus rex. The concert opens with Beethoven鈥檚 beloved Egmont overture.

A concert of big melodies and even bigger sounds culminates in Saint-Sa毛ns鈥檚 mighty 鈥極rgan鈥� Symphony. The French theme continues with Franck鈥檚 Symphonic Variations and, at just 22 years old, British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor returns for his fourth Proms appearance, performing both in the Franck and in Chopin鈥檚 virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 1.

Singer and broadcaster Clare Teal transports us back to the 1930s, as two of the greatest swing bands of the day 鈥� one led by Count Basie, the other by Duke Ellington 鈥� faced off in a memorable Battle of the Bands. In this Late Night Prom, present-day leaders James Pearson and Grant Windsor fight it out in their own, roof-raising battle.

The Lapland Chamber Orchestra celebrates the 80th birthdays of two major British composers. Trumpeter H氓kan Hardenberger leads the way through the maze-like landscapes of Birtwistle鈥檚 trumpet concerto Endless Parade, while Davies is represented by his 1989 Sinfonia. Celebrations of C. P. E. Bach鈥檚 300th anniversary continue with the brooding textures of his Symphony in B minor, while all is languorous sunshine in Honegger鈥檚 Pastoral d鈥櫭﹖茅.

The sea lies at the centre of this concert from Mark Elder and the 贬补濒濒茅. The sunshine glitters on the waves in Berlioz鈥檚 overture Le corsaire, while the ocean ebbs and flows in Elgar鈥檚 Sea Pictures, sung here by mezzo-soprano Alice Coote. Human rather than natural drama is what drives Beethoven鈥檚 鈥楨roica鈥� Symphony, however 鈥� a stirring musical meditation on heroism and valour.

The NYOGB presents a fiery and virtuosic programme of 20th-century orchestral masterpieces, conducted by Proms favourite Edward Gardner. 蜜芽传媒 New Generation Artist Louis Schwizgebel takes the lead in Prokofiev鈥檚 youthful First Piano Concerto, which brims with the same audacious energy that pulses through Stravinsky鈥檚 vividly colourful ballet Petrushka. Lutos艂awski鈥檚 Concerto for Orchestra closes the evening with still more primary-coloured, folkloric brilliance and drama.

Before her solo appearance at the Last Night of the Proms, Dutch violinist Janine Jansen joins with pianist Itamar Golan and with conductor Sakari Oramo (making his Proms debut as a violinist). Two lyrical works by Prokofiev are paired with Schubert鈥檚 sublime Fantasie from almost a century earlier.

National Poet of Wales Gillian Clarke and the painter Peter Blake聽celebrates the centenary of the birth of Dylan Thomas.

In the first of two concerts with the 蜜芽传媒 National Orchestra of Wales, Principal Conductor Thomas S酶nderg氓rd directs the first of two great Scandinavian symphonies. Nielsen鈥檚 Fifth Symphony explores a bleakness that is also at the core of Strauss鈥檚 great tone-poem Tod und Verkl盲rung. The 鈥榗omplicated nonsense鈥� of Strauss鈥檚 youthful Burleske and Mozart鈥檚 sunny Rondo in A major complete the concert, both featuring pianist Franceso Piemontesi.

The 蜜芽传媒 Proms welcomes back Canadian violinist James Ehnes as soloist in Walton鈥檚 virtuosic yet intimate Violin Concerto. S酶nderg氓rd and the 蜜芽传媒 NOW continue with a suite from Sir Peter Maxwell Davies鈥檚 ballet Caroline Mathilde and two great orchestral works by Sibelius 鈥� his soaring Fifth Symphony and the more delicate, mystical Swan of Tuonela.

The dreamy pastoralism of Vaughan Williams鈥檚 The Lark Ascending contrasts with the jaunty vigour of the composer鈥檚 overture The Wasps in this all-English Prom. Job continues this season鈥檚 thread of great 20th-century ballet scores, while William Alwyn鈥檚 First Symphony adds to the evening鈥檚 nostalgia with the endless melody of its slow movement. Janine Jansen joins Sakari Oramo and the 蜜芽传媒 Symphony Orchestra as soloist.

Surrender to the pulsing rhythms and repetitions of Minimalism鈥檚 founding father, Steve Reich, performed by the 蜜芽传媒 Singers and contemporary specialists the Endymion Ensemble. Relive the early experimentation of It鈥檚 Gonna Rain with its hypnotic layers of spoken sound, while The Desert Music offers a hypnotising meditation on fragments of William Carlos Williams鈥檚 poetry.

Sibelius鈥檚 slowly shifting structures and emotive musical language, showcased here in his Second Symphony, are echoed and evolved in Sir Peter Maxwell Davies鈥檚 Fifth Symphony. John Storg氓rds and the 蜜芽传媒 Philharmonic also mark the First World Way centenary in Bridge鈥檚 haunting Oration 鈥� part lament, part warning.
