Great Cumbrae Population - 800 Length - 11 miles Great Cumbrae Island is about four miles long and 2.5 miles at its widest. With a population of around 1500 it is one of the most densely populated in the country. Traditionally it thrived on the tourist trade and day trippers coming from Glasgow, with Millport as the centre resort with cinema, fun-fair, shops and hotels with lovely views of Arran. The island features a number of geological dykes and fissures, one of which is known as the Lion Rock. The wildlife of the island is abundant and it was hear that the Roseate Tern was first identified as being a separate species. King Haakon is said to have set up camp here at Tomont End before the Battle of Largs in 1263.
