Isle of Rum Rum - previously dubbed 'Rhum' in a bout of faux gaelicism sits to the north of Eigg, the largest of the Small Isles. It is owned by Scottish Natural Heritage and stands as controversial memorial to conservation and human habiattion in Scotland. As Ian Mitchell writes in 'Isles of the West': "The mountains on Rum are
among the highest in the Hebrides, exceeded only by Ben More on Mull, and
the black Cuillin on Skye. The names of the places around the coast are
Gaelic, but the peaks all have evocative Norse names: Barkeval, Hallival,
Askival, Ruinsival, Trollaval. 'Val' was the Norse name for hill, from which
