Canadian Immigration: Boom or Bust?
Available for over a year
Last summer, Canada’s population grew to a record 40 million people - a moment the Canadian government described as an “exciting milestone”. The Canadian people didn’t necessarily agree. Canada has long been proud of its multicultural roots, but - for the first time - surveys show a significant number believe there are too many immigrants coming into the country. Accusations that newcomers are hurting “the real Canada” are spreading on social media, with some arguing that Canadian cities simply can’t support so many new arrivals. The ѿý’s Celia Hatton travels to her home country to learn why more Canadians are questioning their country’s relationship with immigration, and why others are fighting to keep the country’s doors open to newcomers. Presented by Celia Hatton Produced by Dan Welsh
