The UK Independence Party has gained its first elected MP, with Douglas Carswell taking the seat of Clacton by 12,404 votes. 5 live's chief political correspondent John Pienaar summarised the result of the by-election in Clacton: "The UKIP party, and now UKIP MP Douglas Carswell won by a landslide, majority of 12 000 plus". Labour held on to Heywood and Middleton but UKIP slashed its majority to 617: "Enough to give Ed Miliband a bit of a sleepless night". John Pienaar added: "The shape of politics is changing and swirling like some great psychodelic kaleidoscope". This clip is from Your Call 10 October 2014.
