George Foreman on Thrilla in Manila: 'The most brutal boxing match ever'

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

It's 40 years since Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier stepped into the ring for the “most brutal boxing match that had ever taken place.” That’s according to former boxer George Foreman who had just been beaten by Ali in the ‘Rumble in the Jungle’. Ali postponed his retirement for the showdown with Joe Frazier in the Philippines. George Foreman told 5 live: “It was round after round after round…Frazier would win, Muhammad would win, nobody knew where that fight was going.” Though he joked he ‘Disliked them both equally’ because of rivalry in the ring, he described Ali as one of the greatest and kindest man he’d ever known. This clip is originally from 5 live Daily October 2 2015.
