Martin O’Neill - Ranieri sacking a ‘really sad day’

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

Former Leicester City manager Martin O’Neill has expressed his huge disappointment at Claudio Ranieri’s sacking as he believes the Italian could still have turned things around over the rest of the campaign. O’Neill claimed Ranieri had the right to “see it through this season” after leading them to an unprecedented title win in 2016. He was also encouraged by Leicester’s second half Champions League performance against Sevilla in midweek as the team showed that they were getting back to what they were doing last season. “They’re actually still in the Champions League, which is what you’re fight for these days.” On a final note, O’Neill also ruled out any possibility of returning as Leicester manager as he indicated he still has a big job to do with the Republic of Ireland. Martin O'Neill is one of a number of managers who’ve been linked with the Leicester vacancy – other potential contenders include Nigel Pearson, Guus Hiddink and Roberto Mancini From Sportsweek Sunday 26 February 2017
