Wife of Marine A says husband is free to re-join Marines

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

The wife of Marine A said the most significant decision was for her husband was to be dismissed without disgrace. Claire Blackman told 5 live: “The most significant decision for us yesterday was that he was dismissed, not dismissed with disgrace, that was the hardest part of the original sentence to bear.” “He maintains his Sergeants rank and a dismissal means, should he wish to, he could re-apply to rejoin the royal marines.” Sergeant Alexander Blackman has been in prison for three and a half years for the murder of a wounded Taliban fighter. His original conviction for murder was reduced to manslaughter after a high profile campaign. He has now been sentenced on a lesser charge and because of time already served it is thought he will be released shortly. This clip is originally from 5 live Breakfast on Wednesday 29 March 2017.
