How celebrities are making money out of selfies

Radio 4 in Four

Available for over a year

Some of the biggest stars in the world are earning hundreds of thousands of pounds by taking selfies in the mirror. Research into Instagram by a marketing company called Hopper QC estimated that the footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo for example, earns around £330,000 every time he posts a picture. It’s because of what’s called ‘Influencer Marketing’, where celebrities team up with advertisers to influence the things we buy. Winifred Robinson talks to Mike Bandar, the co-founder of Hopper, after hearing from marketing company Influencer's Innovations Director Caspar Lee, one of YouTube’s most popular stars who has 8 million subscribers. First broadcast on You & Yours, 4 September 2017.
