Turning thoughts into speech

Digital Planet

Available for over a year

For the first time neuroengineers have created a system that translates thought into intelligible, recognisable speech. By monitoring someone's brain activity, the technology can reconstruct the words a person hears. Eventually this technology could help people who cannot speak due to illness, communicate again. Nima Mesgarani is an electrical engineer at Columbia University’s Zuckerman Institute and is one of the team behind the work (Photo: Creating a brain interface. Credit: Getty Images)
