Edinburgh 70: The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ at the Festival, Virtually
We spoke to Dennis and Debbie Club, who created Edinburgh 70: The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ at the Festivals, Virtually
What is this project all about?
It's an amazing virtual reality tour through 70 years of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ at the Edinburgh festival!
How does it work?
It is a VR experience for the Gear VR. Through gaze selection the user is able to navigate through a richly textured inventive environment which distils the Edinburgh Festival experience into about 15 minutes.
How did it come about?
We got together with ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Arts Digital and Creative Scotland and they asked to make a craze collage of Edinburgh that mixes abstracted digital modelling of the city and short ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ archive highlights from 70 years of the festivals, all at the gaze control of the viewer. So we said. "ok then".
Any challenges along the way?
Challenges yes? Trying to fit a realtime 3D environment onto a tiny phone has been challenging. And trying to create four different environments all with interactivity and archive footage from the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½, and to keep all of that under 500MB (which is the accepted maximum size for something like this) - that's been challenging!
