Know your way around a ballot box? Dig through the voting vaults of past General Elections with the Parliamentary Challenge. Test yourself and your friends to see who will top the poll.

The Inside Story

ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Rewind's Parliamentary Challenge is an archive based general knowledge quiz looking back at General Elections of the past. Using the interactive tool, EKO, as a vehicle, this video-based quiz will cover the wide political spectrum of UK politics.

Can you sum up the project?

It’s an election quiz! However, by using video heavily, we hope Parliamentary Challenge will be engaging and informative. Video will pose the question and the answer – you will then be able to share your score on social media and challenge your friends.

How was it created?

The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Rewind editorial team in Belfast is constantly digging up gems from the archive. With the upcoming General Election, the team delved into the digital vaults and found some fantastic election footage from years gone by. A lot of this footage features in other content from the team, but a quiz was the perfect way to surface some of that material and bring those moments to life in a more entertaining way.

How was it built?

ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Rewind used an interactive video tool called EKO for a previous ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Taster project. This allows users to make choices within the video and in the last project (‘Your Ma’) we mainly used EKO as a navigation tool.

This time, we wanted to use the tool as a quiz engine – allowing the user to remain within the video player and hopefully producing a good experience for users on mobile. We’ve also allowed users to share their score at the end, hopefully creating a bit of friendly rivalry in your social media constituency.

Any challenges and what were the solutions?

This is a relatively small project but it will provide a good base for our developer team in the future with regard to interactive video. This was the first time we’ve done the code behind EKO in-house, including customisation and setting up variables for scoring the quiz. Thankfully, the lead developer on the project, Glenn Davidson, turned the project round in a relatively short space of time.

What do you hope to learn from it being on Taster?

From production side, we want to know how time consuming and difficult it is to do the development work behind customisation of the EKO tool. This quick turnaround project allowed us to investigate the workload involved for such projects and helps us plan before we commit to any larger scale projects.

With regard to the audience, we want to know more about how they engage with interactive video. Do users enjoy using interactive video as a quiz format? Does it encourage more mobile consumption? Do people get impatient waiting for the question?
