An 'Ex-pat from High Wycombe, when I visit the old stomping ground, can't help noting the proliferatioin of the cameras. But I have to say that we drivers are really our own worst enemies, what do we do with the few seconds, or minutes we save on a journey by speeding anyway? Leave in plenty of time, get to your destination less stressed.

I got caught by a speed camera on an industrial estate; which may be a useful deterrent on a busy weekday, but on a Sunday afternoon driving on a dual carriageway, without a vehicle or human being in sight, is ridiculous. I now spend more time checking my speed than I used to, and this has not improved my driving. Surely the road conditions are more important than being limited to a arbitary limit set to make money. I agree with Brian, that you are a greater danger if you don't keep your eyes on the road. George just seems to have lost it ! The camera in Station Road, Amersham seems to have been installed on the wrong side of the road. More people speed going down the hill than up the hill (where the camera is).

I would like to add that recently I attended a driver awareness scheme recently as the result of a speed camera detecting I was doing 36 mph in a 30 zone and it certainly improved my awareness of current road regulations.I might add I passed my test in 1958 and the refresher info was really good as has made a difference to my driving habits when in 30/40 mph zones and how to detect them.

I hate speed cameras but appreciate that where sited for road safety they do their job. My worry is that cameras are replacing Police so that while I get done for 35mph in a 30 limit, the guy with bald tyres and defective lights can kill and maim with impunity. Speed cameras should not replace Police!

I have nothing against speed cameras, if the money collected at these locations is used to highlight the risk and speed restriction in force, with new large signs or road colour changes. These improve safety because they can be seen on the road where you should be looking,This is especially important if you are new to the area. When small dinner plates dating back to the style of the 1960s, are left sometime partly hidden in the trees, whilst new cameras are installed, the true motive behind the camera is bought into question, and keeping an eye peeled for them becomes an hazard in itself.

As a pedestrian I would rather have Brian looking where he's going than George watching his speedo as I'm trying to cross the road. Even if Brian is a little over the speed limit, I bet he could stop faster than George who has taken he eyes of the road just at the wrong time.

i neither disagree or agree with speed cameras around 30mph limits. 9/10 ppl survive at 30mph. 9/10 ppl die at 40mph, that speaks for itself. Just a few mph over can cause fatal injuries and i just think what would I say if that was my child? i would hope they were only doing 30mph or even less in residential areas. I do however totall DISAGREE with cameras on county roads, motorways and on bends etc they are M/M divices for the police and that is totally out of order. What about passing a little responsibility to the driver? Quiet motorway 90mph no children whats wrong with that?

Marion Evans, Bicester Sunday, 25-Jan-2004 10:47:39 GMT
I was "done" for slightly exceeding the 30mph speed limit in Holmer Green Road in July 2002 (at the age of 62) and was called Speed Queen or Girl Racer for ages by my adult sons! Although I was angry with myself more than anything else, it has definitely made me a better driver inasmuch as I am more aware of speed limitations whilst driving.

I think all speed cameras should be banned totally..let everyone who wants to speed do so but make the first offence loss of your licence for a year and 10,000 pounds fine and second offence banned for life.Save the taxpayers a lot of money..but wait a minute that would be against the speeders rights wouldn't it?

mona, milton keynes Friday, 23-Jan-2004 13:00:24 GMT
You don't have to look at your speedo all the time if you are in correct ,your knoledge of your car keeps you right

Larry Gillard, Chalfont St Giles Sunday, 07-Dec-2003 12:56:40 GMT
Most of the cameras around are just a licence to print money and have nothing to do with road safety.Law abiding, honest and hard working people such as myself and the vast majority of the population are being criminalised for the occasional slight error of judgement which results in penalty points and a fine, this in turn causes resentment against the police and the legal system.Instead of erecting even more cameras and speed humps would it not be more benifical for road safety if our apparently invisible police force made a lot more effort to target and prosecute the many unlicensed, untaxed and uninsured drivers on our roads instead of persecuting the long suffering majority.

Brian Tordoff, Chalfont St Giles Friday, 08-Aug-2003 14:04:28 BST
You are ten times more likely to hit a child if you are looking at your speedometer than you are if you are looking at the road in front !!

George Nichols, Aylesbury Wednesday, 26-Nov-2003 16:39:59 GMT
So, Brian, are you one of the chosen few who is allowed to go at any speed, so long as it feels comfotable to you (my taxi driver is also a "chosen one")? Maybe you don't need to check your speedo at all! Or your mirrors, or over your shoulder before moving off, or...has the Highway Code change since I pass my test? Is being in complete control of your vehicle including its speed just too much trouble?
