Leaving
Luton and travelling all the way to Warrington to study at university
was my way of untying myself from my parents apron strings.
Since
graduating on 11th July 2003 I've been back in Luton living with
my parents.
And
I am not the only one, all my mates I made up in lovely Warrington
are all living back at home with their parents.
Its
not that we missed the home cooking, or getting our laundry done
for us as we had all managed to survive three years being independent
but it is because of the state of the housing and job markets.
All
but two of the close group of friends I made are media graduates,
yes few of many thousand.
This
industry like many others is hard to get into, and since leaving
uni I personal have had various jobs from working in factories to
work experience places, and being on the Jobseekers Allowance.
Doing
these has not left me flushed with cash as I left uni like everyone
else with debts.
I pay
rent to my parents but it is far cheaper than if I was to rent a
house in Luton and I have gone back to doing the chores as extra
payment like getting pocket money all over again.
I know
how much rent costs locally as for the past five years my brother
has been renting property in Luton.
He
is better off than me, having not gone to uni, not having the huge
student loan debt and is in a job which he likes with great future
prospects and he has what I had, independence from our parents.
Don't
get me wrong I love my parents but having lived three years without
the 20 questions like; where are you going, who are you going with,
when are you getting in, it takes a lot of time to get use to.
I know
with me being around again they are just making sure of my safety
but for three years I was coming and going as I pleased and it has
taken over a year to get back settled into living to their rules
not my own.
My
parents have been a great support for me keeping a roof over my
head as I like thousands of media graduates am trying to get into
an industry where there are very few openings.
I think
they didn't expect their girl to still be living at home 22 years
old and not having any means to rent let alone buy a house.
The
big question to ask when I manage to get a job is should I rent
or stay at home until I can afford to put down a deposit on a house.
The
only options open to me at the present are winning the lottery or
meeting a millionaire.
