How do you put on your socks?

Hi everyone,

Last week I was reading in a book that, when getting dressed, the majority of people put on their left sock first, and then their right sock. It was something I'd never thought about before, but the next morning, sure enough, I put on my left sock first!

That started me thinking about other strange habits and superstitions. For example, did you know that at Wimbledon, Bjorn Borg (who won Wimbledon 5 times) wouldn't shave from the first day of the tournament until the day he was knocked out? But he shaved during most other tournaments. Goran Ivanisevic did even stranger things in 2001 when he won Wimbledon: he had 10 different rituals he had to perform before every match - one of which was to watch the children's TV programme . Apparently his favourite character was Tinky Winky!

Tinky Winky

I wouldn't say I was very superstitious, but there are some things I do without fail. If I spill salt, I pick up a pinch and throw it over my left shoulder (in the eye of the devil). If I see a magpie - just one magpie - I say "Good morning (or afternoon) Mr Magpie. How and where is Mrs Magpie today?" This makes me look a bit mad if there are other people around! However, if I'm with friends, it's OK, because they all do it too. By the way, it's fine if you see two magpies together, because that is supposed to be lucky. There's a rhyme about magpies that goes:

One for sorrow
Two for joy
Three for a girl
Four for a boy
Five for silver
Six for gold
Seven for a secret, never to be told
Eight for a wish
Nine for a kiss
Ten for a time of joyous bliss

My Mum thinks it's very unlucky to put a pair of new shoes on the table and I have numerous friends who won't walk under a ladder (although that may just be being sensible, rather than superstitious.) Actually, the most superstitious person I know is my Auntie. If she sees a white horse, she has to lick her finger, mark a cross on her shoe and not look back at the horse! That has to be one of the strangest rituals ever: I wonder how it started?

Anyway back to my original question: how do you put on your socks? And do let me know about any strange habits or rituals that you have.

Take care

Carrie

a habit: something you do all the time, usually without even thinking about it e.g. she has a really bad habit of biting her nails
without fail: to make sure you do something every time; without chance of failure

P.S. Have a go at our crossword about superstitions

It's not important for me to put on my shoes. If I pick up my rigt shoe first,I will put on it first. As for strange habits, I am not too superstitious, but if I meet a lady when I leave home to the office or to anywhere, I will retun home and depart again.

Hello Carrie! I put on my right sock first but I think it's more of a habit. But I remember as chlid that my mother would not let us swing our legs when sitting as she used to say that by doing this mother dies. Honestly speaking, I never believed that and experimented too and thanks to heavens! My mother is fine and may she always be fine but somewhere, her words are still in my mind and sometimes when I start swinging my legs I suddenly stop doing so. Take care, Naheed

Hi Carrie, we (arabs or muslims) believe to start the right hand or leg everything we do. if I am honest I dont believe any superstition.

Hello Carrie, my name is Maione ,I always read your staff blogs, because I find they are interesting. About supersttions there is one I have inherited by my mother in law.She used to say that in the evening you mustn't throw the dirt of the floor away because you would throw your luck with it. When she told me I 've mocked her,yet even now, after a lot of years, I never brush the floor after the sunset.Bye bye Maione

Hi Carrie! In the morning I watched carefully the way how my husband and son put on their socks. They, along with me, put on their right sock first. I found this topic very interesting so I also asked my brother-in-law at the office. You should have seen his face while listening to my question. Interestingly enough, the answer was: it depends on which side of bed he gets out. Hmm...I tend to say that I am not superstitious. However, I always do without fail the following things. When I go somewhere and I have forgotten something inside the house and I must go back I always sit down. Going back into the house for something is unlucky so if you sit down the misfortune will not happen. When I see a chimney sweep I always catch hold of button on my clothes because it brings luck. Here, in Slovakia we say that if somebody is mentioned repeatedly then he or she hiccups all the time. I also believe that things happen in threes, especially bad things. Take care,

Dear ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ LE team! As Easter is on the horizon I would like to wish you and your families a Happy Easter. May Easter bring you health, happiness and joys, both great and small and many beautiful moments!

Hi Carrie! The funniest superstition in Ukraine as well as in Russia is empty bottle on a table. It means if you’re drinking with friends you must not put back on the table just empted bottle. Otherwise good luck may go. What’s funny? The matter is that one looks like a fool putting bottle under table in restaurant. The rule is only home working! If you’re watching a person who’s putting an empty bottle under a table in restaurant, be sure the person is either from Ukraine or from Russia. Another one superstition is next: Never come back if you’ve forgotten something at home, but take a look at a mirror if you, nevertheless, have to come back to take something important to you.

Dear Carrie, nice sock! I like the color :) I know your story about white horse. People in Yorkshire (Rachel will set me right if I’m mistaken) consider it to be a bad sign, and spit on the ground or do other strange manipulations to ward off misfortune. It’s a pity I have nothing funny to add to your collection of superstitions. But I can support Vladimir from Ukraine – there is no place for an empty bottle on my table! :)

Hi Carrie! I am a bit superstitious too. For example, I have a kind of lucky dress for some occasions. I make some gestures before some events. I believe in good vibes..I know, I seem so weird. I do not start a DIY work or I do not run an errand on Friday. Mind you, if it is important I definitely do! Good Friday is a public holiday in the UK so it means that you will not post comments until next Tuesday. Happy Easter to you all!!

This is the first time that i think about it. I don't have a specific way to put my choes, i put first the firts that i reach, if the right is the nearest, that's the one that i first put in my feet. In mexico, ther are a lot of superticious people, in my family, my old sister have the idea that if one sits in the corner of the table, e or she won't get merried, or if one sees a black cat it will be bad luck for a long time.

Hi Carrie! My mother said that it is unlucky to meet a person with an empty basket or bucket. To turn this in your favour, you should put something in this basket. Also, note that if you hang a horseshoe in your house for good luck, put it ends up. Otherwise, your luck will fall down from it. Take care!

Hi Carrie, How are you? Your question made me laugh. Apparently that doesn't apply on me because I always put on my right sock. Anyway, hope you have a Happy Easter. See you, Cris

hi carrie..i always start from the right side i mean even if im wearing my clothes i would always put my right arm in the sleeves because i think its good for me i dnt know why but i do it ...n funny thing i wana share 1 of my aunt say if u get any evil eye on u take an egg put it on ur head n spin your hand 7 times and then through it on the wall..so that evil eye will get away...isnt funny na...tc

Hi Umm I don't know which one I put on first. If i do it tomorrow the knowledge of reading this article might affect how I put on socks. I can tell you umpteen number of superstitions followed by my friends, relatives and ofcourse me. We don't start a new task on Tuesdays, while Fridays are not supposed to be good for money dealings. Spilling salt is not a good sign. If utensils fall off your hand while cooking or washing, it is a hunch that relatives will come to your house. In school days whenever we saw a butterfly we would gently touch it so that its color was stuck onto our fingers. When ever we managed to do that we would find money!

Hi Carrie. I'm not superstitious because it carries bad luck :-) People who make sport at certain level have their own ceremony because have watched that it works. Regular movements before tenis service, basketball free throw and so on..... I start with my left sock and I begin to button up the shirt from neck to waist after dressing the trousers. I think that all those regular habits help to be a tidy person. In fact I've realised that we fall in mistakes when we modify our routine, haven't you?

Hi Carrie! Just like Cris, I usually put on my right sock. Happy Easter, Ana Paula.

Hi!! I'm new member here. I want to improve my english and I listen everything from ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ by iPod. Now I would like to meet someone to speak english by Skype. Anyway, I want to tell you about the topic. I'm surprised because I have never thought about how I put on my socks. Tomorrow I will think about it because now I can't say the truth. I think I never do nothing in the same way, I'm not very supersticious. It's very interesting to read supersticions from differents countries! I love to learn about different cultures! I understand all I read here but my writting skill is not as well as you. I hope to improve with your help. Thank you!!

Hi,I put on my left shoe first then right. It is my habit, because I can stand steadily by my right leg solely, but it doesn't work by left leg.

Hi Carrie Even though I try not to beleive in superstitions, I would sometimes do things which lead to superstitions. For example, if I don't do well in one of my exam, I try not to wear the same clothes for another exam. Also, if I park my car in parking area and I don't do well in one exam then I try to park my car somewhere else. These are just two of the many examples that I would use in my everyday life, there are a lot more but I wouldn't like you to get bored with my unrealistic superstitions. There are some superstitions which are known in a culture but mine are just made by me. I try to avoid these self made superstitions but it is difficult. Anyway, it is a good topic for discussion. From reading all comments about superstitions, I know now that superstitions exist in every culture and it is even more interesting to know that these superstitions seem to universal. I hope my commenting on the topic "superstition" is not too late. Take care Rabail UK

Well, I put on my right sock first, I think that's because I'm right-handed. And, when in college, I often brought my glass owl in my shirt pocket every time I have an exam, and you know what,it really brings me luck (or maybe just because I studied hard :D).

Hi to everyone! When I was a student I used to wash my hair the day before an exam: that was my superstition! In my country if a black cat crosses the street in front of you, you cannot go straight because it's bad luck. I blame this superstition, but I confess I sometimes used to act so :-)!!!

Hi Carrie, It's quite impossible for me not to follow some superstitions. I believe that is because it's a very cultural thing; usually superstitious people listened to their parents or friends warning them about some avoidable habits since they were very young. Those warnings just grow into a habit, so it's very natural. And who knows what could happen if you don't follow them... however, It's better don't put yourself at risk ;)
