Do you eat to live or do you live to eat?
Firstly, I would like to say sorry about my spelling mistake that I made in the title yesterday.
Secondly, I would like to thank you for all comments. I would also like to thank Lewis for his intresting story and for loads of new expressions in it.
I spent all day cleaning Csilla´s room before she came to make her feel comfortable. I cleaned the windows, washed the curtain, dusted the furniture, polished the floor and so on. I will only change the bedclothes on Saturday because she likes nice smelling pillowcase. My children tend to say that I am obsessed with cleaning up and this is one of my bad habits. It also causes some unimportant quarrels when they are not as careful about cleanliness as I think they should be. I believe that they will change their mind when they also become parents.
Let´s talk about food. In the southwest part of Slovakia, where Hungarian and Slovak people live together, the Slovak cuisine is more or less the same as the Hungarian because we live close to the border with Hungary. On the whole, Hungarians like eating. I like eating too, but I do not live to eat. My family has meals four times a day: breakfast, snack, lunch and dinner. My son does not eat breakfast at home because he does not want to get up early. So, I prepare breakfast for him that he takes to school. My husband and I eat breakfast at home. We prefer eating rolls with butter or cheese and ham or different kinds of salami to eating cereals with milk. Sometimes I cook poridge. We have lunch at that time when my son comes back from school, between 1pm and 2pm and the whole family eats together. I am happy because my family always has lunch at home. Lunch is the main meal of the day for us. I cook all day, so we always eat warm dishes. We often eat vegetable soup. After that we have the main dish, for example: pasta, cheese or different sorts of meat with potatoes, rice or noodles. Our popular national dishes are: Ujhazi chicken soup, goulash, fish soup, paprika chicken, stuffed cabbage, stew with noodlies. In my kitchen I do a lot of cooking and baking. I usually bake cake three times a week. I like trying new meals, so I often read cookery books or websites on the internet where I can find a lot of recipes. My family likes new tastes as well. We sometimes eat an afternoon snack, when lunch was light. We eat a slice of bread, some spread, fruit or vegetables. My son likes some crisps, but I do not like them. We have dinner between 6pm and 7pm. We eat something light or leftover food from lunch. We are together around the table in the kitchen. Over dinner we discuss what has happened to each of us during the day. My son also says what happened at school that day.
We like food from other countries, too, especially Italian. We often eat some pizza or spaghetti with bolognese sauce.. I hope that I cook healthily. I do not cook with too much fat and I cook a variety of different meals. We also like all sorts of fruit. I think it is better to eat more frequently but in small portions. On some occasions we go to restaurants.
Speaking of meals I am getting hungry. It is too late now so I have to prepare something light for us.
See you tomorrow. Have a nice dream.
Anita

I've often been discussing the topic "eating to live" or "living to eat" with my Chineese friends. Chineese really enjoy their food. They spend a lot of time cooking and it slowly with pleasure. They cannot understand why British people eat such tasteless food and finish their meals in 10 minutes. They always say that British "eat only to live". So I think that when you say that you like cooking and eating good food, than you treat food as more than just some substance that help you survive.
Hi, Anita! You are really a hardworking woman as my mom does. When I was a little child, I didn't mention how tired she was everyday. But as I entered into the college ,I recognized that my parents they gave me the greatest love to me and asked for nothing. Back to the title, everyone came into the world need to eat for live. The different is someone eat only because he is hungry, and someone eat because he love to taste the delicious cuisines. No matter what we are, It is no doubt that we should not waste food god gave us !
Hi Anita!! Your note on eating and cooking filled my mouth with water. Its good habit too have healthy foods full of vegetables and one should avoid the fats. We should take light foods in breakfast and dinner. Avoiding the in between meals is also a great idea in old age. And its really great that you take good care of all this. Your this blog shows that you're a good cook too. Bye4now, NASEEM @->--
Dear Anita, thank you for your lively passage. I like cooking too. I like making different desserts such as trifle which is a traditional dessert in England. I learned that when i studied in England. By the way, Could you tell me what is "Ujhazi chicken soup"? because i can't check ujhazi in my dictionary. Thank you for your reply
I also love a high standard of cleanliness, but my house has been a bit of a mess since my son was born 4 years ago.I think it's time that he leart how to keep his room tidy and put his toys away. I also like cooking and trying to cook new dishes like pasta and some english traditional food. Many people don't have puddings after meals in Korea instead they eat variety of fruits, coffee or tea.You certainly are thrilled to bits to see Csilla tomorrow.i am happy for you and have a great time.
Anita, who doesn't like to eat? Unfortunately, there are those who suffer from eating disorders, which is a shame. During a typical day here's what I tend to eat: Breakfast - a smoothie that has orange juice, a banana, a small carton of yogurt, and frozen strawberries, mango, and pineapple along with some hot chocolate Lunch - raw spinach, carrots, and tomato sometimes along with a sandwich with only peanutbutter on whole wheat bread Dinner - that's where variety comes in; last night I had a bean, rice, and cheese burrito from Taco Bell and tonight I had a frozen pizza Doesn't it seem so silly that I eat so healthy during breakfast and lunch, and then I have something "normal" for dinner?
Dear all, we have had a question about when comments are published. Here is the answer. We publish your comments at least once a day, Monday to Friday. Usually comments will be published the morning after they have been written. thanks ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Learning English
Dear Anita, I am very surprised that still exists a woman (in Europe) who makes a cake three times a week. I dare to say you are amazing person, you are a hero.I suppose you are housewife and know very well what does it mean.Sometimes it is more tiresome than being a working woman.I spend a lot of time in the kitchen in preparing food for my family. But I think it is not common for contemporary women to cook at home.I don't like semi-manufactured food.It is not as tasty and healthy as home prepared one. From among my friends families I am the only one who pay so mush attention on what my kids eat.Pizza or hamburger and cola is the lunch food for many children here.I totaly disagree with this manner of eating. Congatulations! For your blog and for your attitude of mind about eating. If we want to bring up healthy generation we sould not think how just to "fill up the gap".
Hi Anita, I'm so glad you've talken about food. I'm a food technologist and Italian as well!!! So you can imagine I really like food, and I mean also health food. I think we are what we eat. I like trying new kinds of food, expecially other countries' food!! So I absolutely have to try your cooking!! As you I believe it's so nice eating together. For me that is an important part of my life. Eating with other people helps you, first of all, to eat more!! Ahahahah!!! secondary you enjoy better your meal and that's good for your soul I think. I used to live in New Zealand and there Maori people eat together. It's like here in Italy and that's special to me. I want to thank you for your daily report. I'm learning a lot of new things and I have the chance to write!!!! Have a nice day Anita and see you tomorrow! Faithfully, Rosalba
Hi, Anita, I do love your blog. I really enjoy reading it. I am a chinese in London now. I do enjoy the chinese food and the cooking. You are right. Chinese think cooking is a kind of art. Food should be tasty and look great. You are a great mum. I am looking forward to reading your next blog. Thank you for your hard work.
Hi, Anita, I also enjoy reading your blog almost every day since you started. I didn't know there are some countries main meal is the lunch. Here in Japan, main meal is the dinner, but I think considering our heath, the idea of main meal for lunch is better, but in Japan, it would be difficult to have lunch all family members together because the work place is quite far from home. I do remember when we had a party, one of my Hungarian friend cooked goulash soup and it was very yummy, unfortunately I've no idea how to cook. I don't know whether we eat to live or live to eat. As for me, I may live to eat. I enjoy eating. Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading next your blog.
Hello again! Can you all imagine how exciting it is to know that I'm going home to be fed home cooked meals for two whole weeks? Now you see why I said I'd end up putting on loads of weight at home! I hope to at least assist mum in the kitchen during the following two weeks to learn to prepare some easy meals. Then I can impress my housemates with my culinary skills when I'm back in England :) I'm off to pack my suitcase now!
Anita: I enjoyed your writing very much. It was very well done and your discussion of food made me hungry. You prepare very healthy meals and it's nice that your family can eat lunch together. It will be nice to have Csilla eating meals with you as well. Keep up the good work!!!!! James
Hi, Anita, now is Friday at 2.40 p.m. in Uruguay. I am at work but I can write and read you the same. Yesterday I looked for your blog and unfortunately it was not there. I think it is the difference of time. It seems that you are "marvel Woman". You clean your house, prepare a lot of meals, work with your husband, study English and Accountancy, and now, you communicate with people all over the world. Personally I don't like to cook. And surely I don't live to eat. I only eat to live and try to be healthy. At home we have dinner about 8.30 p.m. Have a wonderful weekend.
Dear Mandy! Újházi Ede was a famous Hungarian actor at the beginning of the twentieth century. He was keen on this soup. His cook named the soup about him.
Dear AnitaIreally like your idea.Itistrue we must eat for live, not live for eat.
We had a question. We are hosting some Hungarians but we do not know what to give them for breakfast. We read your blog about your breakfast preferences. Do Hungarians generally eat oatmeal or cereals? Pancakes (with maple syrup) and muffins are popular in Canada, but they can be very sweet sometimes. Hungarian food is very tasty especially eggplant dishes. We are learning to live to eat here.
I teach cooking to 12-14 year-olds. we are studying foods from around the world. Could you tell us about what your table setting looks like? what easy recipe is your favorite? What is considered good manners at your table? What time do you eat meals?
Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
