Pollution is Everybody’s Business

Only two days are left and my time is up here as a blogger. I would like to discuss a topic that interests me.

When Csilla had arrived to the USA, one of the first things that the host family showed her was how to select the waste. They collected papers, empty cans, food etc. in different bags and they took them to the dumpsters in this way. I can remember when Csilla told me that and we were surprised. In Slovakia we started to select waste material only a few years ago.

Maybe speaking of pollution is stereotyped. But I think it is a very serious problem. Normally, people associate the word pollution with polluted air. Each one of us can help to solve this problem by changing our old habits to help the environment. We should start to protect the environment in own yard. For example, we all know that we have a shortage of water resources so it is not a good idea to use drinking water to wash our car. Another example is that we try to recycle many of the materials that we normally throw away. When waste materials are reused, pollution will decrease. Unfortunately, last year we saw an environmental activist who threw an empty flacon away on the street. He set a bad example to my children. In my village we have the opportunity for us to collect and separate waste material. Next to the grocery there are three boxes where we can collect paper, plastic and glass. It is so nice to see that when old people go to the grocery in the morning they bring along these materials in their shopping baskets and throw them in the boxes. They set a good example to young people. We have only had this possibility lately, for about one year. We live next to the main street and lots of trucks and cars pass through our village every day. Sometimes the truck drivers pitch out their waste in front of our house. Another problem is that some people have a lot of junk around their house and when they load up a trailer and take it to the dump they have to pay at the dumpsite. But in my country people are not used to paying for dumping their waste, so they often tip out their waste next to the road or under the trees. I cannot understand these people.
How we can protect nature? What is your idea?

I had quite a hectic day so I am a little tired now. But I am feeling a little better today.
Goodnight! Have a nice dream!

Anita

My family tries to recycle when we can, but not every area provides services to process every item. However, we also need to cut down on waste. I remember talking to some people about the concept of charging people higher fees for larger trash cans (aka "wheely rubbish bins" in Austalia) in hopes of encouraging people to be more wise when throwing things away because of the cost.

In Bulgaria we started to select waste material only in 2 or 3 bigger towns. It is a big problem for our capital at the moment. We have not recycling factories and separeting the waste is thouthlessly. Our government was unable to cope with this problem up to now.I hope in the future it will suceed. What I can do is to go for shopping with my non-plastic bag and choose products, packed in paper.I always refuse plastic bags in the shop because i fed up of them.Simple way but a few people realise it. Bye-Bye

one day my husband and our son went for a walk and they came back home with a children's scooter which was still in perfect working order.when they walked along the street they saw some bikes and the scooter on a note written'we don't use them any more' 'take it what you want'so they brought the scooter home. we thought that was a great idea. instead of chucking them out they offered people a chance to recycle them.many people have had or suggested how to reduce pollution and protect the environment.like using cars less, using wrapping less, recycling as much as we can etc.the suggestions are very useful. but people tend to forget if they are not constantly educated so in my opinon we need to be educated how to recycle rubbish, how to reduce pollution and what sort of conseqence we will face in future very often.also we shouldn't forget this world is not ours.we borrowed it from our next generations.we must try hard to keep the environment in perfect condition for the sake of our children and gran children and great ...so on. Anita,it is nice to hear that you feeling is getting better.take care of yourself!

I think recycling is a very good idea. I am working as a hairdresser, and at work we have got an extra bin for recycling paper. Besides our salon, it is near to the recylcle bins, so we recycle bottles as well. We wouldn't probabaly do that if we didn't have to, but one of our bosses is mad about recycling. At the begining at was quite confusing, what you can, and what you can't recycle, but now, more than half of our rubbish is reclycled. I try to recycle at home, but it is more difficult. Because I haven't got a car, I can't just take things to the recycling point. I think it should be more convienent to take rubbish to the recycling point. There should be more, and they should be placed at the end of roads, near shops, and near public transport.

Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
