7th September- Independence or death!

Hi friends, welcome to the blog.

Today,7th September, is holiday in Brazil. It’s the date when Brazil became independent of Portugal in 1822.

Apart from the unproven theory that the Phoenicians (incidentally coming from Africa to the Brazilian coast) have had been here firstly, all we learn since our childhood is that Brazil was discovered by Portugal and was its colony until 1815 when Dom João gave the honour for Brazil to become a united kindom to Portugal with the support of England which has had been allowed by Portugal to arrive in Brazil for trading and for this reason was protecting the portuguese from french attack.

Meanwhile the situation was black for him (D. João) in Portugal. They didn’t like the news and he was under pressure. He left Brazil and let his son D. Pedro I in his place. In Portugal they wanted D. Pedro I to return to Portugal and to make Brazil colony again. There was a pressure here too. The brazilians would have had wanted to separate from Portugal if it have happened. So Dom Pedro I decided to stay here and Brazil was declared independent in 1822 (although the independence and freedom was not for everybody because there was still the slavery).

To be honest I think our history is very strange. Isn’t strange that the independence of Brazil has been declared by a prince from Portugal? And I feel selfish and guilty thinking why on earth Brazil has not been colony from England? Why James Cook went to the east and not west ? At least my english would be better.

Anyway, sometimes I think the history is too complicated. So I’d better inform you all( just to change the subject) that 7th September is also the date that “Chiquinho”, who, coincidentely was a free and independent little bird, was killed by a cruel eagle last year.

My heart, divided by two opposite feelings: happiness for the holiday and sadness for bringing this sad story to me, is filled with inspiration. What is helpful to write a sonnet. A sonnet not free like modern poems ‘cause Chiquinho was not allowed to be free and independent. Brazil was lucky while my poor little bird...

Sonnet in memoriam

In this early morning free from fears
Chiquinho is innocently outside having fun
From the shadows the eagle appears
And me? I am beautifully lying in the sun

There is no hero in this scenery
It seems to be a perfect crime
Just the stranger and the victim in the greenery
This picture brings that tragedy to mind

Isn’t it ironically the worst luck of the World,
Even if he had never been chained by men,
That comparing to this unfairly large bird
Unluckily he was on the bottom of the food chain?

As a tribute to the best of the best of the little birds
I had promised to myself put down his story in words

*It was what Dom Pedro I screamed at the banks of the Ipiranga River : Independence or Death!

Have a nice holiday! Take care
Adri

A little note:
I wrote this post the day before 7th September 'cause I'm going to travel. It's holiday! Arriba! Arriba!

Hello Adri! I am enjoying your blog entries very much. In your future posts may be you would like to write something about your family and how you met your other half, and some pictures too. For now I have a question to you that, is there any difference between the Portuguese spoken in Brazil and Portugal? Like the difference in accents, vocabulary etc. Naheed :)

Hi Adri. I admire people who can write poetry, something that is very far from my skills. It´s clear you really loved Chiquinho. Often our pets became more a member of our families than a simple animal at home. I think the brazilian independence was inusual, but it's better to get liberty in that way, instead a bloody war. Have a nice holiday

Dear Adriana I really get confused that you posted blog on 6th September and wrote today 7th September as date. Either you post your blog earlier or you wrote today instead of tomorrow. Reader like me who do not know much more about Brazil get confused if you do not write name of the cities starting from capital letter. Similarly, name of persons, nationalities, name of countries etc should be written in capital letter. Your descriptions of cities and bridges that connect two cities are interesting but I feel really sad about suicidal cases from that lovely bridge. It is glad for me to get information what we can do for entertainment in your lovely city.

Hi everybody!! Yes, Adri... I really believe that brazilians are not that brave, you know... Our independence was made by a portuguese!! oO Wow! ahaha But I love this day and this celebration and think it's very important for us and for the country! Love the blog!! Bye bye Tchau

Hi Adri! Your writing is very good indeed! I´m learning lots of new words from you :-). Well, I´m not going to travel this holiday. I was planing to go to Ipiranga Museum, but one of my sisters is almost making my mind to go to the 'Grito dos Excluídos (Shout Of The Excluded Ones). So, see you soon Adri, and enjoy your holiday! All the best, Ana Paula.

Hi Adri! What a nice blogger you are!You are quite witty and creative! A confession here! When I opened your blog today( I started from day 1, because I was away for a couple of days), it took me a while to realize that I was facing a student´s blog. Its size and layout with the nice quiz ,for a second, made me think thatform now on two teachers would be blogging! Imagine my surpise when I saw your name and spotted the name of your hometown! How nice to have another Brazilian blogger. As a regular visitor, I´ve been following all the bloggers and hope that one day I could be in your place as well. I loved the pictures of your hometown.I´ve already been to ES but not your town. I´ve been to Guarapari and Marataises, really nice cities. But anyway,it is nice that you are showing all other readers that Brazil is full of hidden, precious beauties and places worth visiting. So Brazil is not just Rio, Manaus Northeast and Foz do Iguaçu.It is also Mato Grosso where I live and Espirito Santo where you live.I loved all the photos.I just felt really sorry for your budgie´s bad luck! Later on I make comments about the nice poem! My hubby has just arrived bringing take away food, two good reasons for a break! Love, Monica

Hi,Adriana Helena. Thank you for your history of Brazil. I think my city had a history which like your city. I live in Hong Kong, and my city also control by other contry before. The control was disappear from 1997s. Now is ten years ago but i have not any feeling about it. I don't know why but i just think i like america more. I think the reason is about Hong Kong's weather. It is so horrible and the environment is not really clean. Also your picture of ball is so special. If anyone find my writing has wrong. Please feel kindly to corret. Thank you

Hi! I owned similar parrot. Her name was Pusia and she was green-and-yellow. The sonnet is lovely! (Happily, my parrot wasn't killed but just died because of her age)

Hi Adriana, I'm sorry that I started reading your entries after you had long started. But I hope you don't mind if I try to catch up with previous blogs. I found them so interesting, so I'd like to ask about them. I found it amazing those stories you told us about the suicides at the bridge. I've already crossed that bridge, but I never imagined anyone could stop the car in the middle of it and jump off it. And it happened to someone so close to you. Very sad. I was also amazed to know that you already have a son. You seem so young in the picture. How old is he? Can I ask if you have a job and if you do what is it? I must tell you that if you work with tourism you must be a great professional. Well, I'll ask more in later blogs. See you Adriana, Thanks for your nice blogs.
