The Force is strong in this one!

Hello Ana Paula and everyone else,

Easter greetings from the north of England. It's a wonderful day here. The sun is blazing in a clear blue sky, the birds are singing sweetly in the trees, the lambs are frolicking in the lush green fields, and everyone is happy.

Well, actually, the last sentence isn't true. In fact, everyone is happy today except me. I'm in a foul mood today.

Why? Why, on such a wonderful day, is Alex so grumpy?

I'll tell you why. I have TOOTHACHE! Aaaaaargh!

Unfortunately, I won't be able to go to the dentist until next week, so for the next few days I have to deal with my toothache by myself. I'm taking painkillers, of course, and some of my friends have suggested remedies. One friend told me I should use hot, salty water, and another suggested oil of cloves. I'm not sure about either of these treatments, though. So, please, Ana Paula or anyone else who's reading this - do you know any good remedies for toothache? If so, please let me know as soon as possible!

Anyway, let's move on to a happier subject - like films, for example. Did you enjoy 300? I saw it a few days ago, and I thought it was good fun, though sometimes a little over-the-top and silly. You asked about my favourite films: that's always a difficult question, but my list would include The Godfather, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Zoolander (yes, I know it's stupid, but it always makes me weep with laughter), and of course Star Wars. By the way, in case any readers are wondering, the title of my blog today comes from Star Wars - the first film in the series, of course.

How about you, Ana Paula? What are your favourite films?

Thanks for telling us a little about your job. I thought you described the process of galvanization very well; I certainly understand this a little better than I did before. However, as I told you, I'm in a bad mood today, so I'm afraid I'm going to give you and our readers a really nasty spelling exercise. I noticed six important spelling errors in your last blog, and I corrected the spelling of these words, but then I turned them into anagrams. Can you solve these anagrams? Maybe some of our readers can help you. To prove that I'm not completely cruel, I'll give you the first one as an example.

1. hreysctim = chemistry (you spelled this "chemestry")

2. sratsceeni = ?

3. drnhoegy = ?

4. tasayln = ?

5. linsaasy = ?

6. tobtun = ?

Before I go, I'd like to say thanks again to everyone for all your comments - I appreciate them very much, and I'm sorry I can't deal with all your questions in detail. I would like to say to Michi from Japan - thanks very much for your comment and don't worry, my remark about "a problem with your eyes" was just a silly ironic joke. In fact, none of my comments about being "incredibly handsome" should be taken seriously. Of course I'd like to believe I was amazingly attractive and good-looking. However, I have a mirror in my house, so I know the truth!

Oh yes, and well done to all the people who correctly defined 'little by little' and 'it's our own fault'. As most of you guessed, 'little by little' means gradually, and 'it's our own fault' means that we are responsible for our own problem.

Okay, that's all for today. I'm going to sit on the sofa and whine about my aching tooth. Don't forget - toothache remedies! Please please please!

-Alex

Vocabulary

'To blaze' means to burn strongly. If we say, 'the sun is blazing,' this means that the sun is shining very brightly.

'To frolick' means to play in a happy and physically energetic way.

'Lush' is an adjective which we normally use to describe plants. It means that the plants are very full and thick.

A 'mood' is a temporary emotional state. 'Foul' is a strongly negative adjective meaning 'very bad' or disgusting, which we most often use to describe a taste or smell or the weather. However, we can also use this word to describe a mood, so if I'm in 'a foul mood' this means I'm feeling very negative and bad.

Another adjective to describe someone who's in a foul mood is 'grumpy'.

If I have a headache or some other kind of pain, I normally take 'painkillers' - for example, aspirin or paracetamol.

A 'remedy' is something which will cure an illness.

Hello everybody, ohhhuu yes I konw that(I have already posted on this blog) ALEX I AM A DENTIST HERE IN BRAZIL AND unfortunatelly the best way to stop your pain is by going to see a dentist but If you take some anti-inflammatory drugs in addition to your painkiller it may get so much better... if possible I also recommend you to use warm watter inside your mouth, and never outside. You can do it when taking a warm bath, you should take a bit of warm watter in you mouth, keep it inside of your mouth for some minutes and then spit it and doing it several times all infected substance will be eliminated. I hope I have posted this blog in time to help you.

Hi Toothache is a delicated issue because it involves a set of symptons and linked conditions that can mimic symptons attributable to teeth. So only a good investigation (clinical and radiographic) help in making a differential diagnosis by exclusion of dental pathology. A tooth inflammation can be caused by many things as deep cavity, trauma and so on. It's a process that occurs gradually. At first, there is an inflammation of the soft tissue deep inside the tooth(pulp). So, the inflammation starts with a sensitivity to cold and then, progressively it changes to sensitivity to heat, then you may have spontaneous pain. The symptons can include swelling. If you don't stop the process by treatment, it continuous . The pulp innicially inflammed, will die (necrosis) and become infected. The bacteries produce pus that later discharges in the gum. The appropriate procedure will depend on which stage of the inflammatory process the tooth is. So, your advice is excellent if it's in the stage of drainage of the secretion and of course, if it is really an accute abscess. But if the inflammation is at the early stage, the heat would exarcebate the pain and Alex would die from toothache. OKay I have to sleep now but tomorrow I'll see if the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ team has published my comment for him. Until then, I think he has already looked for an emergency treatment. Good night Ana Paula

Hello Alex, I want to recommend to you a remedy that is, perhaps, strange a bit but ‘works’ really. I think everyone knows what such a ‘wonderful’ thing like a toothache is and, in your case, we just have to help you in order to not to lose our English teacher for month. Well, what we, Russians, do sometimes for that. Do you know what it is lard? It doesn’t matter whether you like it or not, here the point is this thing actually treats. Here is what you have to do (of course, if you know what it is lard and have it). First, cut off a little piece of it so that this piece will be able to cover your ill tooth and the part of a gum underneath. Second, separate the soft part from the skin and place the latter against the disturbing area between a cheek and the tooth. Then, just forget about all that and continue to do something you like the most, for example, to blog. Your toothache will have to become silent little by little or, perhaps, disappear at all after about a half of an hour, I believe. That’s all. Be healthy.

Hullo Alex. You used a very grammatically interesting verb 'to frolic' (NOT 'to frolick' !). The verb is very interesting because I found only 2 verbs that add -king to the base form to make a gerund. The other one is politic. Why you English people like making exceptions? Wouldn't it be easier to spell 'frolicing' and 'politicing' instead of 'frolicking' and 'politicking'?

Hi Alex, I'm sorry for your toothache. I've had some terrible toothaches in my life and I can say that the advice Adriana and Elvio gave you to go see a dentist is the best one to follow. I'm afraid that is the only thing that really helps. I read Ana Paula's blog and I think she already solved the task so I won't try. My favourite kind of films are musicals. I like those old ones in which people dance a lot and sing a lot too. I like the ones with actresses with powerful voices. I find them amazing. The way they sing. But I like the modern films too. Science fiction is also one of my favorite kinds of movies. so I can include Star wars series in my list. Bye for now.

hello Alex, unfortunately,I used to have toothache. My mother told me that you should take a bit of cool water in you mouth, keep it inside of your mouth for some minutes and then spit it and doing it several times.Above all the water is from green tea.when the inflammation in my mouth started this remedy did work well.I hope you be healthy soon!

Hello Alex and everyone else! Oh! Unfortunately! I used to have toothache, so I know how you are feeling. There is a remedy from me. By simple, I do and see that it is useful. I use warm water with a little salt dissolved, keep in my mouth about five minutes in early morning when I just get up, and then, I clear my mouth by pure water. I see this method is good, it protect our teeth from toothache very well! I don't know how about you, for me, you should try it and make it be a your own hobby. Ah! I'd films, such as Titanic, Gone with the wind,The Gladiator, Misson impossible and some of chines films. Alex! I hope toothache will go far away you soon and happy days will go back fast. Bye Alex and everyone!

Hello all, as I was the one to introduce Darth Vader here and some of you have wondered who is he, I am pleased to tell you that he is a fictional character. The free encyclopedia namely Wikipedia tells the following: "Darth Vader is a fictional character in the Star Wars universe. He is the pivotal character to the original Star Wars trilogy and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. In the original trilogy, he was portrayed by David Prowse and a series of stunt doubles, while his voice was supplied by James Earl Jones. Vader is one of the most iconic villains in film history and was ranked third on American Film Institute's 100 Heroes and Villains list.[2] In Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Vader is depicted as the epitome of evil. He is the cunning, brutal enforcer of the Galactic Empire's rule across the galaxy. A Dark Lord of the Sith, Vader serves as Emperor Palpatine's right hand, using the dark side of the Force to mercilessly pursue the Jedi and the Rebel Alliance to the ends of the galaxy. The prequel trilogy recounts the heroic rise and tragic fall of Anakin Skywalker. Anakin was portrayed by Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen in the prequel trilogy, while Sebastian Shaw played the role in Return of the Jedi." All best for everyone, hope Alex is better.

Oh my gosh! I've never seen so much dentists in a community. When I need something about my tooth I'll come here again. OK, ok, I confess I always come here because I'm studying english and need to improve it. I've studied for one year and I want to get the maximum knowledgment in the minus time. So, I'll be back to learn more and more with you. Besides, what do I have to do to create a blog in the same way of Ana Paula's blog? Thanks.

Hello Alex I'm sorry for your pain. But you can't obviously complain about the weather! In Sweden we have had weather in foul mode. I hope to get your blazing sun, but you can keep the toothache, I mean get rid of it, but not to me of course. Blazing greetings

Hello. Here is the most natural solution for your tooth ache: take a shot of brandy and keep it in your mouth for a while, till u feel a nice warmness inside your mouth. I suppose you will be tempted to guzzle it, but better do not, however if you gulp it nothing terrible will happen. If you repeat this operation too often you could end your evening in a too jolly mood, or you could fall asleep earlier then you have planned before. I must admit my father liked this recipe very much, and he used it pretty often, till my mother took the reins and demanded from him to go and see a dentist urgently because she got fed up with his brandy cheerfulness. So be careful!

Hello Alex, How is your achy tooth? Believe it or not, I used to struggle with my toothache on my own without painkillers or any dentists. I really hate dentists! (Shh!Don't say it to Envio Junior.) I'll offer you some remedies in a minute. I'd say that I know one more verb that needs to add "k" before -ing to form its gerund or present participle form. It's "to picnic", isn't it? I find some picnic expressions like "to go on a picnic" or "to have a picnic" but nothing like "to go picnicking" in the dictionary I have. So I don't know for sure whether the last one can be used. Another thing, according to Adek from Poland "Politic" is a verb, but I think it's an adjective. Its verb form is "to politicize,-se". Otherwise, my dictionary says "politicking" is a noun. All right, now let's go to the remedies for your trouble tooth. Very easily and simply, first, massage the tooth, which can ease yoour pain around 40 percent ; then, rub some toothpaste around it and leave it for a bit while, which lessens some more 20 percent; after that, rinse with water or better with salty water; finally, hold a mouthful of hot green tea until the pain vanihes. WOW!!! That does work 100%! Cheerio!

Hi Alex, this message was not for you but for Ana Paula. I think there was a problem to publish it there and they put here. Sorry.

Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
