Kayvan, Iran
Pair work depends on either the topic or the activity which students are learning. In some special cases pair work can be more beneficial to students to exchange their ideas about the topic, otherwise in majority cases studends prefer working with whole class.

Trinh, Vietnam
In my opinion, pair work is a good way for every student in class to state their own ideas. Besides, this method helps student become more dynamic and enthusiastic in distributing their lesson.Lastly, I think that pair work makes class effective and successful.

Olga, Russia
I'm doing the CELTA course at the moment and we're being taught to use a lot of pair work in the class. I teach a Pre-Intermediate group as a part of the course and I find pair work quite effecient. Indeed, everyone is willing to share their ideas with their partners even if their English is not very good yet!

Kilwon Lee, South Korea
I use it in almost every lesson.

Tienhoa, Vietnam
I'm a lecturer teaching in University. In my view, pair work is an effective way for teaching a classroom with a large number of students. I think this method is more advantage than others because it allows the students to build up confidence, creativity, and self-discipline. I encourage them not only to conduct such method in the classroom but also to use it for outdoor activities.

Cristina, Spain
I sometimes use it, I think it's a great activity for students to speak English, especially in a large group. However, it's highly important that students are aware of its importance and take it seriously, otherwise it is not useful and they end up talking about other stuff in their own language.

Elisabed, Georgia
I try to use pair work often because I think that it is very useful to inprove skills such as: communication, sharing and getting knowledge, cooperation, self-expression, listening. Sometimes students are not active in groups because they don`t feel comfortable, or they are just lazy, but in pairs they don`t work alone and also they are the main charracters with certain responsibilities.

Reshma, Pakistan
I found Think-Pair-Share an effective teaching strategy. In this strategy you can give students a minute to think about a familiar topic individually, then ask them to share their thinking with thier partner and lastly a whole class discussion can be generated.

Michelle, Italy
With monolingual classes it can be tricky, Italians love to talk and revert back quite quickly, older students in particular feel that they pay to talk to you not to another student, so it is a balancing act.

Rafael Miranda, Brazil
Hi everyone! I'm a trainee teacher here in my country and I reckon pairwork gives a great opportunity for students to use English in class, especially the shy ones. Some students get embarrassed about speaking in front of the whole class. When they share information with a classmate, they feel confident to make mistakes and ask vocabulary questions. However, I agree it's difficult to monitor students and make sure they are speaking the target language. What we have to bear in mind, in my point of view, is that students are supposed to speak English in class and they know it. Perhaps, discussing with them the importance of pairwork and alternating the monitoring would be good solutions. Thanks!

Brazil
I usually use this metod, but sometimes the students don't have a specific goal, then they talk about trivial things.

Zeenat, Bangladesh
My children love to do the pair work. I think this is the best way to engage them in various activities, get opportunity to know each other, to share their thoughts, to respect others opinion, to bring out their hidden tallent. I love the way they do help each other to speak in English. I always encourage them to do so, let it be broken, wrong but you must continue!

Eva Afrose Khan, Bangladesh
I prefer pair work because it lessens the stress of some weak and shy learners. It is even helpful for slow learners, too. Using group discussion, they get the idea from other mates and start thinking. If they cannot get an idea to present, by the discussion, they are able to say something for or against the topic. Pair discussion helps to find their ideas and they can select the best ideas by themselves.

RC, China
Classes here are too big to effectively use pairwork regularly. Undermonitored students often do not take on the responsibility of doing something correctly. If the pair or group are told they will make a presentation to the class then there will be some good effort made. The ideal of pair work appeals to me but I need more experience and knowledge to apply it well.

M. A. Malek, Bangladesh
Pair work is very improtant for learners because it gives them many ideas, insights and communication abilities. I think every teacher should use pair work, even if only for 10 minutes in every lesson.

Jessica, Belgium
Usually teachers like to let students work in pairs but the problem is that some students take advantage of this activity to speak about other things during the activity. And sometimes they don't even speak English during this kind of task.

M. Statz, Germany
It depends on the group. Some just chat in German and then let the best person do the talking. In a class of 30, it is difficult to supervise the individual groups and make sure they speak English. For me it works best with absolute beginners and with advanced groups. Absolute beginners are still very enthusiastic about the foreign language and advanced groups feel the pressure of the exams and know it will be useful as an exercise. In between, there is some apathy.

Hammani Mohamed, Morocco
Hello everybody, I am a trainee teacher of English language. Pair work seems to be a good idea because it immediately increases the amount of student practice. But, if we refer to an imaginary class of forty students, this case does exist here in Morocco, we can immediately see that at any one time (in oral pair work exercice) twenty students are talking at once instead of one.Pair work allows the students to use language and also encourages student co-operation which is itself important for the atmosphere of the class and for the motivation it gives to learning with others.I noticed, during the guided class observation, certain problems usually occur; teachers are often worried about the use of the students' native language in monolingual groups. Usually students will use English if they are motivated to do so and the teacher explains what the reason for the activity is. Incorrectness is another worry, but as it is repeatedly said accuracy is not the only standard to judge learning: communicative efficiency is also vitally important and pair work encourages such efficiency. To my mind, Pair work is useful but we should take the class size into consideration. If students are left in pairs for a long time, they become bored and, restless and badly behaved. Thank you very much.

Noha
I use pair work. It is a good way to make a change in the class and the students become more active and help each other.

Catherine, France
I only do pair work with 'quiet' classes as I known they will talk in English (and not chat in French thinking I don't know what's going on!!)The advantage is that even shy students want to have a go. My favourite one is (pupils from 7 to 9) when they are back to back and they describe their clothes. Then they have to memorize and concentrate more on the activity. They also like questions like 'what's your job ?' as some of them love being a film star or a fireman for a few seconds. They feel less stressed communicating that way and the dialogue is more free.

Marc V., Belgium
Ever since I started teaching English 25 years ago, the (theoretical) benefits of pair work have been put forward in schoolbooks and training courses. However attractive and efficient the method may prove with fluent adults, implementing pair work with large (25-30) classes of 16-18 year old students nearly always ends up in chaos.Young students most often lack the motivation, and willingness, to actually use English in the suggested activity. They generally start chatting in their mothertongue as soon as they get opportunity to talk "unattended". Which is a pity of course. Still the noise and chaos is worth enduring for the 2 or 3 pairs of students who actually do speak English during the activity and also benefit from the post-activity feedback I give them.

Thais, Brazil
I believe pair work can be a highly productive activity at any level,as long as it is wisely managed. It is an opportunity for students to share their knowledge, to practise their communicative skills and compare their own performance to their peers'. However, teachers have to be aware of students' individual characteristics and pair them up in an efficient way. Some combinations simply won't work.

Youssra, Tunisia
Pair work has many advantages. First, it breaks the routine of individual work. Second, it makes the teacher's job easier by having a brilliant student sit next to and help a less competent one. In this situation competent students will be like the teacher's assistants. Pair work also develops the students' social skills by enhancing the interaction between classmates. It will teach them how to work and cooperate with others. Actually, the teacher's job is not simply to teach the subject but also to develop the communication skills in his/her students.

James B, C olombia
The theory, that pair work facilitates language learning, has been well proven. Therefore, the question for me is not how should I feel about it, but how has my experiences, with pair work, been? I teach EFL and find it extremely difficult to keep my students on task and using English. I often find them talking about what they did the night before while speaking in Spanish. So, I feel that pair work is beneficial, but I still haven't found an optimal way of emplimenting it.

Mohamed, Egypt
I think pair work is useful especially in small classes where it is easy to control the activity.

Hanh, vietnam
It is a good activity to encourage students to share ideas and help each other. Students feel secure in pairwork. They feel less anxiety when they are working "privately" than when they are "on show" in front of the whole class. Pairwork can help shy students who would never say anything in whole-class activity.

Mostafa, Egypt
I use it especially when I'm tired as teachers shouldn't do everything. We have to give students chances to depend completely on themseleves without expecting to get help. In addition, it helps students to share ideas and work with others.

Hichem, Tunisia
In the ideal world, pair work is a good classroom practice; especially to consolidate the speaking skills. However, when implementing such activities, the issue of classroom management rises, notably in large classes where teachers can't make sure that their students are discussing the targeted issue. Furthermore, noise can be just as annoying to the teacher as it is to the serious students.

Hassan, Iran
I like pair work beacuse it rk gives studens confedence.

Irina, Russia
Language itself is comunication ability. You are part of the comunication sysytem. The more youare together with smb (communication)the easier to make the next step forward...

Stella, Russia
Hi everyone from S.Petersburg! Pair work is a vital part of my lessons for basic-level students. This approach of teaching English is really helpful in getting used to listening, repeating and building dialogs for beginners. In Russia I often face low-motivated students who have high sense of self-esteem but little practise. It makes for breaking ice in their haerts and minds.

Seven, China
Not all the pairwork is good for the students. In my classes,I use pairworkwhich can interest students.

Sadia, Pakistan
I think pair work is very useful for practicing listening and speaking skills whereas for reading and writing I prefer Inividdual work. In pair work activities it's difficult to judge learner's individual performance .

Claire, Spain
I use it when appropriate to unite group members, encourage a collaborative approach to the lessons or to pair weak with strong to balance the output. I must add that I insist on English whilst they are discussing possibilities/ answers etc.... Plus, we change pairs regularly so that the students don't get complacent!!!

Arul Prakash
In language classes pair work becomes part of learning activity. Since students need to use language in real life situations, pair work is of immense help to them to overcome shyness ir fear.I make students practice with situational role play activitiesy in my classroom.

Neil, Canada
I think pairwork provides the best opportunity for students to practice listening and speaking skills. In a class, pairwork also maximizes speaking time for students. Groups can be effective for some exercises, but I still prefer assigning pairwork in most cases.

June, France
I like pair work but I've run out of good activities becuase I've had the same students for 2 years.

Janet, Netherlands
I'm a native speaker, and I teach Dutch university students. I often use pairwork so that they can practise speaking to non-native speakers, who have accents and make mistakes. In the real world, most of them don't have much contact with native speakers, so talking with each other is pretty realistic. In the Netherlands there aren't many discussion topics which are really taboe, so I often choose a controversial subject, where students are likely to disagree. So they get practice in presenting opinions tactfully, and defending their own positions. Very useful practice for academic discussions.I also get them to do textbook grammar exercises together. Most of them really need to improve their grammar and writing, so this is a way of making otherwise dry material more palatable. And a lot of them have a hang up about grammar, so it's comforting for them to realize that they're not alone.

Harry, China
In my view, it's an emergency thing for our Chinese schools to improve pair-wor k time, especially in senior highschool. We have too much things to learn but too little time. Many science teachers usually tell us some conclusions they have got, instead of letting us to get them ourselves.I think it has became a tragedy that some of the Chinese students have lost their ability in cooperation. For instance, in our school, when it turns to chinese classes, the teacher gives us a topic to discuss in two or four, many groups come directly into other topics, and when the teacher tell us to share our ideas, very few students talk forwardly. Some of our teachers come to realize this problem, they give us more topics rather than talking about the texts in the book(simply reading texts himself is like a lecture but not a class!), and I hope we can take part in these discussions actively.

Colombia
Pair work activities help students to be more communicative and make the class more active and dynamic. We most use a variety of group activities to have a different class and help students to interact.

Lenora, Brazil
I think it's important to have students working together because they feel more confident to practice the language, and it's easier for the teacher to discover their difficulties and help them.

Yulya, Ukraine
I appreciate when students work in pairs as it gives a great opportunity for them to communicate, and it also saves time when doing the excercises. Students can help each other and they feel free talking to their classmates. Pair work and group work is usual at our school and teachers use it fluently.

Meryem, Turkey
I think pair-work is very useful for the students but since there are nearly 50 students in my classes it is very difficult to prevent the noise. Moreover there are a few students who really wants to learn English, others prefer to speak with each other during the pair-work activity. So I rarely use pairwork.

Asmita, India
Almost 99% of the time in my class I use pair work becouse i think its a good way for students to interact with other students who have different intellectual levels. It's helpfull for both types of student and I'm lucky that my students mostly like this teaching pattern. But I feel that sometimes when I want to detect individual performance, it's quite difficult to do in pair work. But if we carefully watch then we can detect individual performance in pair work. For the best results in pair work I think we must we devide the class up carefully.

Yuki, Japan
I think it is depend on what kinds of class and people if pair work is usefullness or not. In my experience, pair work in Yoga lesson is not so bad bacause I'm not good at head standing by myself.

Talat, UK
Students get a better opporunity to clarify their concepts and check their understanding with freedom and ease when using pair work. Some students are really reluctant to express themselves in front of others.

Hassan Baloch
I find that students are interested in pair work. Though pair work could be considered un-Islamic, I emphasise to them that there is nothing un-Islamic about working together because Islam teaches us that before marriage that all Muslim men and women are brothers and sisters.

Zulfiya, Kazakhstan
Hello, everybody! In my country students like pair work, it is great mental work because while discussing they not only learn how to share opinions but how to listen to others. construct arguments, put reasonable qustions, analize opinions, making sum up and discussion itself.but demands from teacher to be good psycologist she or he should know the degree of her or his students.i mean its clear that shouldn't be pair of good studets or weak, because strong should help weak and vice-versa, students encourage each other to work together.

Zulfiya, Kazakhstan
In my country students like pair work. It is great because while discussing they not only learn how to share opinions but also how to listen to others. construct arguments, ask reasonable qustions, analize opinions, sum up and discuss things too. But pair work demands that teachers are good psycologists. They have to know their students well. I mean it's clear that we should pair good studets with weak ones because the strong ones can help weak ones and vice-versa, and students can encourage each other to work together.

Cornelia, Austria
Pair work takes a lot of stress off the shoulders of students, however, it is important to remember to consciously mix the pairs so that the students are not always with the same partner which might get very boring over time.

Patricia, London, UK
I like using paired work to give my students confidence to try out an idea before expressing openly in a class discussion . There are opportunities for giving voice to things that possibly they wouldn't have bothered to say out loud, but in a less formal scenario they will make the effort. It is particularly good for the quieter members of the class.

Saura Fioretti
I use pair work activities it's very important to plan the goals very well and give the students all the cues they need. So they can better satisfy their desire of expressing themselves, share their ideas and point of views. I believe it's a very fruitful strategy that helps shy students and overall they can benefit from their peers and get easily involved in their speaking activity.

Jeevi, India
I enjoy using pair work as it helps learners to interact freely. It motivates students to exchange their views without any hesitation. It also reduces stress on the learning of the subject.

Ksenia, Russia
pair work is a great thing! students become frendlier with their classmates! they feel respect for their group when answer to a teacher! but on the other hand it`s difficult to observe all of them and hear the mistakes they say. my students enjoy discussing some issues all together giving pro and cons, trying to find the solution!

Susan, France
In large classes especially, it's the only way that all the students have an opportunity to speak. Also, those who are too shy or less confident to speak in front of the whole group have an opportunity to practice.

Eduardo, Brazil
I use pairwork in almost every lesson because not only it promotes interaction but it's a good way for me to actually listen to each student and evaluate their speaking. On the other hand, I've heard some Ss saying they hate pairwork, they think it's boring and are tired of doing it on every lesson.

Muhammad Hanif, Pakistan
When teaching in the classroom, I find engaging the attention of students difficult. So I deliver lecture and engage them with myself.

Nasr Alfutaisi, Libya
When pair work is used in teaching English, the students can react together using the language more effectively. They are encouraged to speak the language communicatively in order to make sense of it. Subsequently, students will feel that they gradually control the language and they can express themselves. Better students, during lingual interaction, can correct the wrong utterances of their classmates. Most students enjoy pair work but the teacher has to consider the text or subject which the students are dealing with.

Carlos E.M Lacerda
Like everything in life, we need balance. There is time to pair work, and time for working individually.

Michal, Czech republic
Pair work is only way how to learn language, but not only that, conversation and work in groups/pairs should be structural element of all scientific and nonscientific disciplines. Unfortunately many of our teachers do not get it yet.

Kelechi, Nigeria
Pair work is good, it enable student to learn deeply about a particular subject, if properly handle, not in neglective part of it, or a situation where by students will live what the are suppose to do and start doing something that will not benfit them anything. But if student will cultivate or form the habit of studing in group they will achieve success.

Bilal, Iraq
Pair work is fantastic in the classroom because students care able to talk to each other.

Martine, Belgium
Pairwork only works with motivated students. Most of my students speak about the last football match or about what they saw last night on TV in their own language if I'm not close to them.

Concepcia, Catalonia
Pair work is useful for small groups, aware students and, above all, if they come from different countries. But in big classes of monolingual students it doesn't always work.

Behrouz, Iran, Tehran
In Iran most people prefer to work individually, pair work is almost meaningless, there are few obedient people almost everyone wants to do what she or he think is better,or in lots of cases in groups people prefer to be lazy not to do anything. But I belive pair work is quite more efficient

Mustapha, Alegria
I consider pair work as fruitful for both learners and teachers. Learners of different knowledge backgrounds exchange a variety of ideas and different ways to express themselves. Teachers can proceed with less difficulty.

Mustapha
I consider pair work as fruitful for both learners and teachers. Learners of different knowledge backgrounds exchange a variety of ideas and different ways to express themselves. Teachers can proceed with less difficulty.

Fernando, Spain
I think this helps them to know better each other and they also feel encouraged since sometimes it's difficult for them to speak in front of the class.

Meer Ahmad Tahiri, Afghanistan
Pairwork usually gives students the opportunity to help each other learn about the language. Most students enjoy it but I have to be very careful with the topics they discuss. I should always consider their general interests and background

Alison Rochford, Australia
I really like pairwork for communicative crosswords where one student has the 'down' words and the other has the words 'across'. They have to provide the clues to each other to guess the words and complete the crossword. Great for paraphrasing skills at all levels!

Diego, Spain
Pairwork is only relevant for motivated students. Most of my students look forward to speaking in their own language, so if I'm not close to them, they will change language in a matter of seconds to speak about what was on tv last night instead of working with the topic I gave them. The only solution to improve their speaking skills would be to make pairwork controlled by those students who are really motivated and who will encourage the rest of the students to use English.

Amina, Algeria
I think that pair work is impotant to shaire ideas and information but we should not use it all the time because sometimes the learners need to be evaluated individualy to know their level and if they are progressing or not.

Rob, Turkey
I use pair work as much as I purposefully can, but always make sure my students are aware of its value and its purposes. I avoid perfunctory pair work -"think in pairs", "read in pairs" etc. are out :-)...

Jen, Korea
I often use pairwork in my class because it makes students get involved in the class and give them a chance to speak. I like using information gap activities.

Kelly, USA
Depending on class size, level, and student raport, I either use pair work a lot or very rarelly. Pair work is only effective if the students work hard and well together. If the class is too large, it is harder for the teacher to be able to monitor and be sure all groups are on task, and not making mistakes, or that only one person is doing all the work. Making pair work exciting, and/or a part of an assignment can help keep students engaged.

Omar Kharuobi, Libya.
Pair work is better for communicative teaching. Students enjoy working together more than with their teacher. However, teachers should swap the pairs around to stop students becoming bored. I get students to work in pairs. It is almost always in my lesson plan.

Chan, Hong Kong
Discussion is a must in communicative language teaching.

Rabail, Northern Ireland
Hello,I strongly agree with working in groups. Listening to your teacher all day could become boring sometimes so asking students to work in pairs might be useful in terms of concentration. Apart from that, I also think that working in a group give students an opportunity to express their own ideas, students learn the skills of interacting with each other and it can help them to become more confident. In my student life I never had the chance to experience working in a group and I therefore believe that I lack confidence. However, if I were expose to working in group situation I would have been a different person today. I would really encourage teachers to use pair activity more frequently in their classes. Most children enjoy working in group. I would also suggest that sometimes same ability children should be put together so one person in a group is not dominating the activity. Other times different ability children should be put together so the less capable children from the smart ones. It would probably help if children in a group are given different roles so everyone in a group has something to do. I think there are more advantages than disadvantages. In fact, I can't think of any disadvantages if the activity carefully organised. For examples, it should be something that the children can manage it easily. This is all from me today, have a good weekend.

Viorica, Moldova
Pair work is one of my favourite activities as it helps enhance students' communicative skills. Besides, they learn to collaborate in order to succeed in what they are asked to do.

Moog, Canada
We use pair work occasionally in class. I find it useful when the teacher allows us to do it, but not without some guidelines. Some things like individual work or each person must contribute and show their work provides some ease in letting the system get abused. The idea of working in pairs helps me get an understanding through other people's words and I get an entirely different point of view which is cool.

Yen Hanh, Vietnam
I think pair work is an effective way to get students' attention and give them confidence in some cases but not in all. I use pair work to give some less-controlled practice and in role-play situations.

Bee, Indonesia
In pair work we divide the student into some group and let them discuss the problem that we have given to them. But before that we must give clear instructions to help them in finishing their task.

Juan Manuel - Colombia
It is sometimes useful because people can practise between themselves and they change their ideas and concepts. A class is made by the students not by the teachers; we are only guides. The ideal class is where people have different activities for practicing their knowledge.

Sas, France
I like it because it gives everyone a chance to speak and practice the language we are learning: but with a big class it is difficult monitor. Fun exercises with information gap are most successful.

Ajaz, Pakistan, Multan Shahmachin
Pair work is the key of success of life for all humankind. Either you are in the field of education or practical life it will bright your thoughts and will make you successful in the whole life. Group work will polish your demolish thoughts into new bright colors of victory. We not only implement pair work in our study rooms but we also follow in our social life for excellent outcomes and brilliant results. I would like to share my not forgetful outstanding victory. When I was a 10th class student. I used to practice my class work and debate preparation with my classmates in the pairs, the results I got were outstanding top in the school and first prize in debate, that was awesome. The same happiness I achieve in my daily life with team work. Thanks for reading this is another electronic way of sharing ideas this is called pair or group work.

Dagmara, Poland
I like to use pairwork as it gives some less-controlled practice and creates the illusion of real-life situations for my students

Hikmatullah, Afghanistan
I remembered when I was the student of 7th Class our respected teachers have taught, working in pair it's very neccesary and useful for classmates for transmit their knowledges/ qualification with each other.I dersired from all educational dept to be used this technic.

Leslie, China
I love pair work.It is a practice of oral speaking and public discussion. In this preriod, students could express their opinions toward a certin topic freely. Sometimes even teachers are illlumined from students' comments.

Santiago, Spain
I use it once in a while, depending on the level of the students. The more they know, the better they do cause, after chatting, they have to explain to the rest of the classmates the details they talked about, and I think this makes then work better.

Hassan, Saudi Arabia
I think it is better to work in pairs to share our ideas , point of views and to try to presuade each others with the other point of views

Kim, Korea
I feel great when I do pair work with my classmates because she/he knows something I didn't know and we share our knownledge about the topic each other. And my favourite pair work activity is Chemistry and Art

Marcela, Colombia
I think it's sometimes necessary because students can learn and share more anomg them. Also, because it's time to change the class routine and they enjoy pair work. Teacher must plan what they want as a goal.

Colombia
I think this activity is sometimes necessary because students learn and share among them. They like to work together and change the routine of the class.

Hatem Hassan, Egypt
I always divide my class into pairs to help shy pupils learn more from thier parteners and for both students to practice more language.

Najla, Tunisia
I believe that pair work is a fruitful strategy in classrooms for it encourages low achievers and shy pupils to benefit from their peers and get involved in the lesson.they will speak out their ideas because they are not afraid of making mistakes.

Ivan, Brazil
Working in pair work can be very useful in some kinds of lessons. In a speaking section, for example, it's necessary put two or more students together to work in group. As a teacher I always use such resource in my classes.

Linda, Brazil
I use pair work in most conversation activities in my classes. It's a great opportunity for students to exchange opinions and improve their oral skills. Students get used to authentic language situations when they have to bring the "artificial" language conversations from their textbooks to life.

Irish, Philippines
Pair work helps students learn to share and exchange ideas pertaining to the acitivity.

Pauline, France
I find pairwork useful to allow students a bit of preparation and peer correction before they have to speak in front of a larger audience. It helps shy students build confidence and gives them some speaking time that they wouldn't otherwise get. What's important is to make sure that the pairs are not always the same. Making students change partners often allows for less routine, and avoids the development of chatting instead of working.

Abdurahman, Somalia
My friends and me used to work in pair to pepare exams, for almost two years. It has always been beneficial to us, because we very often get good grades. However, it is very important to know how to manage the group not to waste time.

Tamer, Egypt
I used to use pair work when I was teaching small groups of students. It is extreamly useful for both teachers and students. However, in large classes, it's impossible to use pairwork because surely the teacher will lose control over the 45 students in the class.

Suhail, Saudi Arabia
Pair work builds confidence in somer of my students and it also helps them rely on their peers. It has a noticable disadvantage that the weak students become parasites and don't try to put any efforts in their studies and rely too much on their teammates.Sometimes pair work becomes a habit for the students and they start chit-chatting than paying attention to the teacher.I prefer JIGSAW activity to teach reading skills and that has been very productive so far.

Jorge, Mexico
Pairwork usually gives students the opportunity to help each other learn about the language. Most students enjoy it but I have to be very careful with the topics they discuss. I should always consider their general interests and background.

Priscila, Brazil
I think pair work or group work is an effective way of improving Sts confidence and making them realise how much they are able to perform without being controlled by a teacher.

Fabiola, Taiwan
Sometimes I like "pair work", because it can inspire us to think different ideas. But the other way, if someone is shy and doesn't like to talk in English, it will be a big problem.

Nicole China
I believe that it is necessary to use pair work in classroom which can help to activate the learning atmosphere around us,however,we can't apply it too often cuz students will find it boring.

Darren, Vietnam
I sometimes use pairwork, but I much prefer the synergy that group work offers. I find it much more productive in the ESL classroom.

Debora, Brazil
Pair work, in my opinion, is very important because it is the only way they have to practise their listening and speaking skills.

Mike, France
It can be a really useful way of getting the students to talk as much as possible in class. However, when you use it with single-language class, you can find yourself running around the classroom trying to make sure they use English!

Jocelyn, Taiwan
Love and hate it. Depends on what kind of activity I conduct on some certain topics. It can be quite time consuming as I always make sure each one of them has done what I expect them to, therefore, it takes long to check on the class. I love to pair them up when we practice conversations. And kids love to stand upon the stage and speak up with a partner.

Nabaraj Raut, Nepal
Shortly we can say pair work is a team work. I do feel pair work create harmony relation with member and also its goal oriented. My favorite pair work is taking a training or same assignment.

My friends and me used to work in pair to pepare exams, for almost two years. It has always been beneficial to us, because we very often get good grades. However, it is very important to know how to manage the group not to waste time.

I love to use it whenever I can. Preferably, though, I would go for problem-solving or information-gap activities. As well, I love to use pair work because it gives the individuals time and confidence to prepare to speak in front of the rest- including the teacher!Students usually come up with better ideas when they tell one person "privately" first, and then they feel powerful to expres themselves, whether in written or spoken forms. I just love it!

I use it for answer checking as well as practising dialogue. It's essential in maintaining a student to student based class .

Pete, Thailand
This pair group working is help a lot different than working alone. You can feel it.

Hector, Chile
Sometimes I use pair work in the classroom and I think it is useful for the student to gain confidence and sel steem so It is also important that the teacher be very close and dont disturb the dialogue between them.Correction culd be explained later. It may be possible to change or rotate the pair of the student in order they work and gain experience in talking with others. I think that the activity in pair work is better applied in debates or discussion especially when you give the students a focus they dont agree with it so they can motivate in talking

Benadicte, France
I use pair work because it is the only way I have to make sure each student actually gets to speak some English during class. Otherwise only the most confident students dare to speak in front of the whole class.

Morten, Denmark
My students are going in specialclass because of their behavior and their lower IQ. I think it's difficault because of big difference in behavior and their individual forces in each subject. But I do it often anyway to give them all the other importent social values.

Virginie, France
I'm a french student and I don't like to work in pair, I think it's a waste of time...Indeed, the level is sometimes so different between the students (heterogen) that there is no exchange. (lack of vocabulary, etc...)Finally, the best student works for two and the gap increases again. the teacher has less exam papers to mark.

I love to make pair among students to learn some thing. In my opinion this is the best way by which we can understand very well and do work easily and smoothly.

Amina, Italy
I always use pair work as it is a good opportunity for students to practice without feeling the pressure from everyone listening to what they are saying.

Nha, Vietnam
Work in pair will enable you to discuss and talk what sometime you can not ask your teacher. It's a good way to practise English like speaking and listening. You can learn something from your partner and in return.

Erzsike, Hungary
I feel students have to experience producing the language without the teacher's control. The aim of pair work is to encourage them to act and get small successes from time to time which will provide them courage, confidence and willing. They can study accuracy later, and in different ways. A language class can not be good without this activity.

Elena, Russia
It's good to use pair work when you train communication skills. I love to give crosswords with missing words to students so they have to explain the blanks to each other.

Hooria, Pakistan
I always encourage my students to work in pair, as it makes them more social and the can show their talent too.THEY gain CONFIDENCE from it and it doesn't have any disadvantage.so SHARE WORK--PAIR WORK

Veronique, France
I don't use pair work very often as I don't know how to correct students when they speak, without asking them to talk in front of the group which they sometimes hate.

Maryam, Iran
Yes of course. Pair work is one of the way that teachers can motivate the student to speake. In this method the students usullay try to use thire passive knowledge .e.g. conversion, role play.

Lily, Brazil
Students like it most probably because they chat a bit while doing the activity. They share experiences and learn from each other, not only about the content but also about life. It promotes interaction, which looks like the best part.

M Qaseem Mahmood, Pakistan
I think pair work is good for the learners of any language, through it they can share their speaking skills.

France
Most students love it! I use pair work from time to time. Those who would otherwise never speak during lessons get a chance to use the language in small groups. Therefore, they all improve!! I also encourage them to change partners regularly during a lesson.

Marta, Poland
I generally teach small classes and pairwork always works. My students love it - they can see that what they've learnt actually works. I use pairwork for all sorts of activities: dialogues, information gaps, discussions, etc. We all enjoy it.

Dr.Jameel Ahmad, Saudi Arabia
Pair work speeds up learning process. The two learners assist each other when they face any difficulty in understaning the given reading materials or activities. Secondly it improves their powers of retention and sharpens their ability to understand the language and to express it.

Rochelle, Singapore
Yes, we do some pair works in the class even sometimes do it in the outing. Teacher will give us a paper enclosed a lot of questions before the outing and put 2s of us as a group to finish this paper. i like this way training my ablility.

Dennis Ludena, Japan
I use pair work in almost every class. I believe is important to allow the students to try to express their ideas in their own way. One thing we must focus on is the way they talk in that pair work, with the teacher or with another student, in order to make the necessary corrections, in grammar or pronuntiation. My favourite pair work is the interview method, not just because is a good practice but they could meet each other better to make the class more friendly.

V.Balasubramanian, India
Pair work is a useful tool in a small sized class. In Indian classrooms overflowing with students, it can be used only sparingly. It can be quite successful in language teaching where students are asked to report to the class the personal details of their bench mate hard by them. In grammar learning classes too it can be quite handy especially in the learning of voice and direct and indirect speech. Whenever pair work is deployed, a high achiever and a moderate achiever can be paired in order that peer learning may take place, making for a relaxed learning setting.

Kasem, Phumphong
Even though my class is very small I try to use pair work with my students in order to train them to think, to work and do things with other people. Because in their real life they can not be able to live alone without any involving with other people.

Spain
It´s great, in my opinion, but I think our teacher must be near us, because she/he can learnt better our pronuntiation and others wrong things. Students can improve our skill doing sentences, our pronunciation and others things.

Maria, Cuba
It is an excellent form or practicing the target language, but it has to be carefully prepared to get profit out of it. Teachers have to prompt students adequately, as well.

Elaine, Israel
I love using pair work because the students enjoy being able to talk to each other and help each other. It also makes the atmosphere more relaxing.

Ajaz, Pakistan
Yes, it is a good thing to share ideas with each other and discuss them in the classroom.

Robson, Brazil
In my view this is an essential exercise. If you want to see your students improving their speaking skills, the best way is to set exercises to be practised in pairs or small groups.

Mrs Entisar, Libya
Pair work is a good way to give the chance to the students to use the target language without hesitation or fear of making mistakes. It helps students increase their sel-confidence as well as their language profeciency. As a writing teacher, I always use pair work to give the students to discuss the topic together beofre they start writing. It gives them the chance to exchange ideas and topic related vocabulary. I also find it interesting because it gives me the chance to evaluate students without having to put the in the spot where they feel frustrated or afraid.

Elena, Belarus
In my opinion, pair work is an excellent kind of training. The more you speak, the sooner you will speak correctly. Moreover, for some students school classes is the only opportunity to communicate with sombody in foreign language. As for me, I use pair work at every lesson and both me and my students enjoy teaching and studing English.

Walid, UAE
I use pair work pretty much in my class. I see teaching as a way in which students learn not only from their teachers, but from their peer. To tell the truth, some students learn better from their classmates than they do from their teachers. The teacher might be the main source for learners, but he should not be the only one. The burden of the class should not be only on the teacher's shoulders; students can take part, can't they?

Helen, Crimea
Pair work may be used in order to practice the material already presented, the students are to be provided with the vocabulary list or grammar patterns, their motivation is of great importance, otherwise it's a waste of time, boring activity for the group. I use this type of activity rather to check the skills formed.

Abdelilah, Morocco
Pair work is effective if students are dedicated to learning a particular activity. However, they still need monitoring. Some students can use the period of pair work to talk about other thing that have nothing to do with their learning. Pair work isn't a total replacement to the individual attention a teacher should provides. However, attending students individually doesn't work in crowded classes.

E. Akilan
Pair work gives the desired result only when the classes have a manageable number of students, say 20 - 25. When the strength of the class is unwieldy, pair work ends in chaos. So I use pair work in my tiny classes, whereas, I avoid using it frequently in some of my classes which have a student strength of more than 70. I ask my students to do pair work in reading comprehension, in written composition, like report writing, translation exercises etc.

Arman, Kazakhstan
I use pairwork and groupwork in every lesson because I teach English to overcrowded classes. By having students work in pairs I let them all practice the target language.

France
It's great. I use it every day, the lesson is a failure if I don't. Speaking English makes students feel that they can speak the language!
