Horrible Histories: Fawkes' 13 Gunpowder Gang
This Bonfire Night... watch as Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators embark on a devilish plot to blow up Parliament.
Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder plot
Boom! Bang! Crash! In 1605, a group of sneaky plotters planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament—and everyone inside! Their goal? To get rid of King James I and put a new ruler on the throne. The most famous of these fiery fellows was Guy Fawkes, a brave (but slightly bonkers) soldier who really, really liked explosives.
Fawkes and his gang smuggled 36 barrels of gunpowder into a cellar right under Parliament—enough to make a massive kaboom! that could’ve changed history forever. But before Guy could light the fuse, the king’s guards got a tip-off and caught him red-handed. Uh oh! The silly mistake? One of their sneaky plotters wrote a letter to their brother who worked in Parliament to warn him so he didn't get hurt... naturally the brother told everyone and foiled the plans!
After some not-so-fun “questioning” (ouch!), Guy confessed and the plot went up in smoke. Ever since, people across Britain have remembered the failed Gunpowder Plot on November 5th, lighting bonfires and setting off fireworks. So next time you hear a firework go bang, remember Guy Fawkes—the man who tried to blow up Parliament and instead became Britain’s most explosive history lesson!
