ChairmanÂ’s Report
Ranjit Sondhi updated members on recent Board of GovernorsÂ’
meetings, the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Annual Report launch in Birmingham and the 2003
ENF seminar.
ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Chairman
Gavyn Davies, Chairman of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½, reported on the progress of the
Communications Bill, the findings of the Joint Committee and the
implications of the potential future role of Ofcom for the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½.
He described the changes to the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½Â’s governance and accountability
structure which gave it more powers and greater clarity. He also
re-affirmed the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½Â’s commitment to the English Regions and
discussed the new digital services.
RAC Programme Reviews
ENF members presented the key issues to have emerged from their
respective RAC programme reviews in relation to the Commonwealth
Games, the 6.30pm regional television news programmes, and the late
evening news bulletins.
Advisory Council Message Board
ENF members agreed to upgrade the message board to a full website
facility for members.
RAC Half Year Reports
Members highlighted the key issues to have emerged from each of
the 12 RACs to date in the business year. It was further agreed
to circulate those issues, along with the individual RAC ChairsÂ’
introductions, to senior ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ management and governors.
Governors Objectives
The Secretary, English Regions, advised members that individual
governors had been given responsibility for monitoring specific
ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ corporate objectives. She would seek advice on how best the
advisory councils could contribute to that process.
Sports
Charles Runcie, Head of Sport, English Regions, gave the ENF a presentation
on his role, and the issues and challenges he faced. He also spoke
of his ambitions for sports coverage in the English Regions and
shared with members ideas for a number of new initiatives he hoped
to develop.
Management Report
Andy Griffee, Controller, English Regions, presented a report to
members and answered their questions in relation to it.
Accountability Developments
John Smith, Chair of the West Midlands RAC presented a paper on
the role and remit of advisory councils which led to a discussion
on their future role.
